Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex

One of the most iconic landmarks in Mongolia is the Chinggis khaan statue complex. The Chinggis khaan equestrian statue is special for the Mongolians in more ways than one. Even though the world knows this personality as a savage and brutal dictator and has lots of stories related to his destruction and massacre for the civilian population, for Mongolia, he is a national Hero. In fact, Chinggis khaan has ruled over the largest contiguous Empire in the history of this country and helped establish the Mongols as a cultural as well as political force on the global map. His photo can be seen on almost everything from cigarette packets to bottles of liquor.
 

Architectural Style of Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex

The foundation building has resemblance with the European Gothic style architecture, and symbolizes that Khan is standing on Europe after being successful with the military campaigns. The statue is suggestive that he is returning to the home country and upon stretching eyes to the East, you can also will see a small statue of his mother seemingly greeting him.

The statue is on the bank of the Tuul River at Tsonjin Boldog which is about 54 kilometers (34 miles) east from the capital city Ulaanbaatar. Legend says that the hero here found a golden whip along the river bank and so the statue is pointed towards the east which is his birthplace.

What to Visit?

The Chinggis Khaan statue complex has become one of the most prolific tourist destinations of the country because of a number of reasons. When you come here, the museum is definitely what you should be visiting. You can find the exhibits that are as old as the Bronze Age.

You can also find many artefacts from the 12th and 13th century. If you are lighter visitor, try the variety of traditional costumes that are available. One of the main reasons to try this is for you to realize the weight of the attire that the Mongolians usually wear.

According to many, the statue is a representation of courage and power of Chinggis Khaan. As you to enter the complex you will also find the statues of the other nine generals (noyons) of Chinggis khaan.

Make sure to take a photo next to the big boots - it is apparently the largest traditional boot in the world! Tourists also often organize a picnic alongside the river bank and hang out with the Mongolian families. Upon returning, you can stop at the roadside stands and taste the airag which is the formatted milk of mare and other local products. For a more authentic experience, you can meet up with a family that lives in the Ger.
 

Entry Fee & Visiting Time

It costs 7,000 Tugrik (2.46 USD) to enter the complex. With this fee, you can visit the museum and enjoy a video about the construction of the statue. It is open 10:00 am – 6:00 pm every day.
 

How to Reach?

It takes about 1 h 7 min (34 mi) via AH3 to reach Chinggis khaan statue complex from Ulaanbaatar. You can rent a van to reach there – drive on your won or get a driver. Most tourists make it a day trip from the capital.

Visitors can go inside the Chinggis khaan statue complex, which is a two story base of the Statue. There is a replica of this Legend's Golden whip. They can also try a sample of the traditional Mongolian cuisine which consists of potatoes and horse meat and then play a game of billiards is you think. Ascending to the exhibition hall, the visitors can get at the back of the horse with the use of an elevator and then take a walk towards the horse's head crossing the chest and back of the neck of this animal statue. Understandably, it provides an excellent panoramic view of the scenery ahead.
