Tsagaan Suvarga - The "White Stupa" with Natural Rocky Formations

Stretching for about 400m-long (1,312 ft.), tsagaan suvarga is a huge cleave of white-sand cliffs, punctuated by strips of pastel shades of orange, purple, and red. You might find it a similar one as that of Bayanzag, but this is a more popular tourism destination.

Location of Tsagaan Suvarga

Located in the Dundgobi province, these cliffs are 419 km (260 mi) away to the southwest of Ulaanbaatar. They are as old as 10 million years and the different colors in the layers indicate the different ages of time. Geologically, this is one of the most amazing natural creations and consists of clay deposits in perpendicular position.

Formation & Facts

Many years ago, there was a big sea in Bosoo and Khevtee valleys of Tsagaan Suvarga. After the sea dried, it was filled with many glacis and escarpments. Soon, the area got covered by different sedimentary layers and today, Tsagaan suvarga is a big escarpment with about 200 m (656 ft.) height and 400m (1,312 ft.) long. The harmony of the colors is what you must look out for and is where it got its name from. The steep of Tsagaan Suvarga faces eastward and when there is strong wind or storms, animals fall off and die. The highest point of the “White stupa” is about 60m (197 ft.) tall and looks like the ruins of an ancient city from distance.

One of the Best Hiking Choices

These unusual forms of natural formation of the cliffs also appear like a massive waterfall after heavy rains. For adventure travelers, this is one of the finest choices for hiking in Mongolia. You can imagine a 400m-expanse cliff of white-sand cliffs, which has prominent strips of pastel shades of orange, purple, red, along with the grumbling beat of swallows while you approach the cliffs! Be careful if you are moving towards the edge and because many of the parts are eroded. Looking down, you can see more white sands forming a huge roll of landscape of various colors formed due to mineral deposits.

KHevtee Bosoo Agui

Also referred to as “lie and stand caves, this is one of the primary attractions in these cliffs. It is so named as some parts of the cave are small, and travelers must crawl to get in while there are areas that are so large that it is easy to stand up.
