Day 1 Shanghai to Huangshan by High-speed Train, Ascend Yellow Mountain by Cable Car
Welcome to choose the 2 days Huangshan tour from Shanghai by bullet train! Whether you’re a train fanatic or not, trying the Chinese high-speed rail, the world’s most extensive network with an operating mileage of over 50,000 km (31,069 mi), is a must! We’ve reserved your round-trip train tickets in advance, and this morning, you need to reach Shanghai railway station on your own for a 2.5-hour train journey to Huangshan. Upon arrival, your guide and driver will warmly greet you at the Huangshan train station, and escort you to the UNESCO-listed Yellow Mountain, aka Mt. Huangshan.
► Pack Light: It's recommended to avoid large suitcases and prepare a lightweight backpack with non-slip sneakers, a raincoat, a hat, gloves, and trekking poles. Yellow Mountain in winter, between December and February, offers spectacular snowscapes, so make sure to bring warm clothing and crampons during this period.
After a 1-hour private car ride, we’ll arrive at the foot of the Yellow Mountain, where you’ll take a scenic cable car ride along the 2,666-meter-long (8,747-foot) line, ascending about 800 meters (2,625 ft.), while taking in fantastic mountain landscapes shrouded in mist. A famous Chinese saying goes that “Once you’ve seen the Five Sacred Mountains, you don’t need to see others; but once you’ve visited Yellow Mountain, you don’t need to visit the Five Sacred Mountains”, which emphasizes its breathtaking beauty, characterized by its “Four Wonders”: odd-shaped pine trees, strange rocks, the sea of clouds, and hot springs.
► Please Note: About 100-200 meters from the cable car exit, you may encounter monkeys blocking the way, and use your hiking poles to shoo them away.
Once at the top, your guide will first accompany you to hike to the 1,668-meter-high (5,472-foot) Beginning-to-Believe Peak, famous for being surrounded by steep cliffs on three sides, offering views of densely packed granite rocks and ancient pine trees. These pines are the soul of the mountain, with their roots intertwined in the crevices of the rocks. Their branches facing the sun grow into gnarled shapes, and their crowns are flattened by strong winds through the valley. Head to view the iconic Black Tiger Pine, which resembles a tiger descending the mountain to hunt its prey. We’ll continue to see two classic rock formations: “Stone Monkey Gazing over the Sea of Clouds” and the “Flower Growing out of a Writing Brush”. The latter is a towering, solitary peak shaped like a writing brush soaring straight to the sky, with an ancient pine growing from a crack at its top, resembling a flower blooming from the brush tip. Millions of years ago, underground magma intruded into the earth's crust and cooled to form granite, which has been gradually peeled away and disintegrated through long-term weathering, ultimately shaping the unique rock formations of the Yellow Mountain.
If weather permits, let’s enjoy a stunning sunset at the Cloud Dispersing Pavilion, where the afterglow paints the sky into an oil painting. Staying until nightfall, you can also gaze upon the starry sky as there is minimal light pollution at the mountaintop, with the Milky Way clearly visible. Today, you’ll stay overnight in a hotel on the mountain top. Your guide will check the sunrise time in advance and confirm tomorrow’s departure time with you to watch the sunrise.
► Warm Tip: Food and supplies at the mountaintop are carried up by porters, who climb over 60,000 steps to load them on bamboo poles, so expect much higher prices than those in the city. Bottled water costs approximately CNY 10 (USD 1.5), and a hamburger costs CNY 30 to 40 (USD 4.3-5.7). If you choose to dine at your hotel, a meal costs around CNY 180 (USD 25) per person at your own expense.

Day 2 Sunrise & West Sea Canyon, Down by Cable Car, Visit Bishan Village, Return to Shanghai by Train
★ Enjoy a Stunning Sunrise over Red Sunglow Peak!
Wake up early and follow your guide to catch a gorgeous sunrise! Red Sunglow Peak, aka Danxia Peak, is the closest sunrise spot to your hotel, and it saves a lot of walking time. Remember to wear warm clothes and bring hand warmers in the incredibly cold early morning! At dawn, the mountain is still shrouded in a dark blue mist. The rising sun gradually leaps from the sea of clouds, illuminating the sky with an orange-red halo and gilding the originally pale gray clouds with amber edges. In that moment, you’ll realize that getting up at 4 am. is totally worthwhile. As the sun rises higher, countless golden rays spread from the horizon to the mountains, bathing the stone steps, pine branches, and even the shoulders of those watching the sunrise in a warm glow.► Optional Sunrise Spot: Bright Summit Peak, located over an hour's hike away and often much more crowded, is also an excellent spot for watching the sunrise. If you prefer this peak, please communicate with your guide in advance and be prepared to wake up much earlier.
Afterward, go back to the hotel for breakfast, and continue to explore the West Sea Grand Canyon. This route primarily involves descending steps that skirt sheer cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the sea of clouds. It’s better to wear gloves as you need to hold onto the iron railings along the way. Soak up the surging mist, and it feels like walking among the clouds in a fairyland.
► FYI: Best Time to View the Sea of Clouds
1. The best months are from December to March, when the sea of clouds often forms after snowfall. Additionally, from April to May, spring rains also make sightings very likely.
2. During the “plum rain” season from June to July and the autumn rainy season between September and October, the probability of seeing the sea of clouds increases dramatically within 12 hours after heavy rainfall, so pay close attention to short-term weather forecasts.
