What is the weather like in Xinjiang in summer month of June?

Is Xinjiang Hot in June?

June, the first month of summer, brings temperature rises to Xinjiang. It is warm in the northern part and hot in the southern part. See details:

Most areas in northern Xinjiang, including Ili, Urumqi, and Altay, have comfortably warm temperature in the daytime, which is around 25 - 30°C (77 - 86°F) and hardly exceeds 35°C (86°F), especially Altay. The nighttime is cool overall, and it’s possible to feel a bit cold in places like Altay. Turpan, due to its special terrain, is extremely hot, with the daily temperature ranging from 25°C (77°F) to 40°C (104°F).

Southern Xinjiang becomes a little hot, mainly in the second half month. In the first a few days, it is still possible that the daily high is lower than 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). However, since mid-month, the daily high quickly climbs to around 35°C (95°F). In recent years, the highest temperature in June is usually about 37°C (99°F). Thanks to the huge temperature gap in a day, you can get relief from the heat in the evening, when the temperature is about 20°C (68°F). Additionally, the Pamir Plateau enjoys a cool climate due to its high elevation.

Dry with No Much Rain

Summer is the season with the highest precipitation in Xinjiang. In June, some areas like Urumqi and Hotan experience their wettest month of the year. However, even in relatively wetter northern Xinjiang regions like Urumqi, the average monthly precipitation is only 35 mm over 7 days. Moreover, the rain rarely lasts long. You might feel a slight chill when it does rain, though. Note that mountain areas, like the Tianshan Mountains, receive more rain, which sometimes even comes quite suddenly.

With overall precipitation remaining low and high temperature accelerating evaporation, Xinjiang is dry this month, especially in southern part.

Long Daylight Hours/ Sunshine Hours

June marks the month with the longest daylight time in Xinjiang. In southern Xinjiang, the daylight time is usually 15 hours; while in northern Xinjiang, which is of higher latitude, it lasts about 15.5 hours, and in Altay, it can even reach around 16 hours. You will find that the sun rises from 06:00 to 07:00 in different areas, and does not set until about 21:00-22:00.

The sunshine duration is also long at 10-11 hours in June, thanks to the sunny weather of Xinjiang. With thin air, the UV rays are strong. You are recommended to take some necessary protection measures, and even stay indoors during the sunniest hours.

Should I Visit North or South Xinjiang in June?

Northern Xinjiang in June is quite worth visiting. First, the temperature is mild and cozy, and there are enough sunny days with blue sky. Second, at this time of year, the natural scenery is at its most spectacular: the grasslands are in lush green, wildflowers bloom everywhere, and the lakes shimmer in brilliant blue. But if you want to visit Turpan, June with the high temperature of around 40°C (104°F) is not a good time.

Southern Xinjiang climate in June features intense heat and sunlight, and is not very comfortable for visiting. If you insist on visiting the southern part, however, consider going out for sightseeing in early morning, late afternoon, and evening, and resting during midday, when it is hot and intensely sunny. Additionally, the Pamir Plateau is significantly cooler than the lower places, making it an excellent choice for escaping the summer heat.

Packing List for Xinjiang Trip in June

Xinjiang June Clothes

What to wear in northern Xinjiang in June:
To visit northern Xinjiang, pack summer clothing primarily. Males can bring sweatpants or jeans with T-shirts. Girls can bring dresses, but you may need thin leggings underneath to keep warm as well as ward off mosquitoes. Additionally, pack a lightweight jacket for sun protection. A 3-in-1 jacket is also essential to ensure warmth in mountainous areas or rainy weather.
Waterproof and dirt-proof high-top boots are most suitable, as there is the possibility that you encounter rain when visiting grasslands.

What to wear in southern Xinjiang in June:
Pack thin, breathable, and sun-protective clothes. For tops, consider short-sleeved T-shirts or tank tops plus sun-protective shirts. For bottoms, lightweight long pants are preferable to shorts for sun protection. Of course, if visiting cooler areas like the Pamir Plateau, you will also need a thicker jacket, such as a 3-in-1 jacket.
Breathable sneakers or canvas shoes are more suitable for southern Xinjiang.

Essentials for both Northern and Southern Xinjiang:
1. Sunglasses, sunhats, sunscreen, and other sun protection items.
2. Moisturizing mist, lip balm, body lotion, and other hydrating products.
3. Mosquito repellent spray.
4. Umbrellas or raincoats, especially for northern Xinjiang.
