What is the weather like in Xinjiang in February?

Cold, Especially in Northern Xinjiang

Northern Xinjiang remains chilly and experiences huge temperature fluctuations in a day: nighttime temperature is low at about -15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit), sometimes dipping below -20°C (-4°F); daytime temperature climbs over 0°C (32°F) occasionally, but generally ranges from -5°C (23°F) to -10°C (14°F).

In southern Xinjiang, daytime is not very cold with the daily high of around 5°C (41°F) and sometimes even 10°C (50°F). However, it’s important to note that, like northern Xinjiang, southern Xinjiang also sees significant temperature differences between day and night. Consequently, evenings here are also cold, with the temperature potentially dropping to around -5°C (23°F).

Dry with Low Precipitation

The weather of Xinjiang is quite dry. In February, most parts experience very low precipitation, which generally does not exceed 10 mm on average. Northern Xinjiang is less drier than the south: on average, areas in northern Xinjiang may see over 5 snowy days, while some areas in southern Xinjiang may not see a single snowflake all month.

But on the bright side, the dry air makes the apparent temperature slightly higher.

Increasing Daylight Hours/ Sunshine Hours

Daylight hours in Xinjiang show an increasing trend: on average, they fluctuate from 10 to 11 in different regions. The sun rises at around 09:00-10:00 and sets at around 20:00-21:00.

You can enjoy about 6-7 hours of sunshine per day on average in February. Plenty of sunlight, on the other hand, means you should remember to take sun protection measures.

Packing List for Xinjiang Trip in February

Xinjiang February Clothes

Upper Body Clothing: Whether traveling to southern Xinjiang or northern Xinjiang, a thick down overcoat is necessary. For inner layers, you can wear a wool sweater under a thick hoodie in southern Xinjiang. However, in northern Xinjiang, it is advised to replace the thick hoodie with a heavier fleece-lined jacket.

Lower Body Clothing: Fleece-lined thermal pants and thick long johns are recommended to bring for northern and southern Xinjiang, respectively. In terms of the outer layer, opt for windproof and waterproof outdoor pants.

Footwear: For southern Xinjiang, comfortable and warm shoes like thick hiking boots suffice. However, if playing in areas like northern Xinjiang’s Altay, where thick snow cover exists and may wet your shoes, you may need a pair of waterproof snow boots.

Accessories: Essential items include thick hats, scarves, and touchscreen-compatible gloves. UV rays are a bit intense, and sunlight reflecting off snow can also harm your eyes, so sunglasses are recommended to pack. To prevent your skin from feeling dry, you also need to bring body lotion and face moisturizer.
