Yes, in December, Xinjiang is very cold.

Northern Xinjiang can be described as extremely cold. For most areas, the temperature is generally below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), even in daytime. Specifically, daily highs of Urumqi hover around -10 to -5°C (14-23°F), while daily lows range from -15 to -10°C (5-14°F) and occasionally drop to around -20°C (-4°F). Ili and Turpan have a temperature about 5°C higher. Altay, however, is colder, with daily highs around -15 to -10°C (5-14°F) and lows usually between -20°C (-4°F) and -15°C (5°F); on the coldest days of the month, the daily lows can even drop to around -30°C (-22°F).

Compared with northern Xinjiang, southern Xinjiang experiences milder temperature, though still quite low. During the first half of the month, the daily maximum temperature is around 5°C (41°F), while the minimum generally stays around -5°C (23°F). In the latter half, the two values drop to around -5°C (23°F) and -10°C (14°F), respectively.
 

Does Snow Fall Frequently in Xinjiang in December?

Not really. 

Actually, December in Xinjiang is dry with low precipitation. On average, northern and southern Xinjiang see precipitations of no more than 15 mm and 5 mm, respectively. Is December A Good Month to Visit Xinjiang?

Generally speaking, December is not a perfect month due to the cold weather of Xinjiang. However, for some travelers, this month does have its merits.

If you love snowy landscapes, northern Xinjiang in December is perfect for you. At this time, areas like Altay and Kanas are blanketed in deep snow, becoming a white fairy-tale world. As for southern Xinjiang in December, its greatest advantages are fewer crowds and lower costs, which may attract some visitors traveling on a budget. What to Wear in Xinjiang in December?

 Clothes: For your December trip to southern Xinjiang, you are recommended to pack these layers: For tops, choose thermal underwear or wool sweaters as your base layer, sweaters or hoodies as your mid layer, and down jackets as your outer layer. For bottoms, wear thermal underwear with thick pants. 

For northern Xinjiang, you need to wear even warmer. For example, you can wear thermal underwear, a wool sweater, a hoodie, and a down coat; or thermal underwear, a sweater, and a 3-in-1 jacket with a down-filled liner. As for pants, thick outdoor pants are essential, which are windproof and water-resistant. Thermal pants are also necessary as the inner layer.

 Shoes: If you plan to visit northern Xinjiang, you are advised to bring high-top boots that are warm, waterproof, and slip-resistant, given the low temperatures and thick snow in some areas. Southern Xinjiang generally doesn’t see thick snow cover, so regular hiking boots will suffice.

 Others:
1. Be sure to bring hand cream, body lotion, and lip balm to protect yourself from the dry climate of Xinjiang in December.
2. The sunlight reflected by the snow will be intense, so wear sunglasses to protect your eyes when going out. Alternatively, you can bring snow goggles, which not only shield against sunlight but also block wind.
3. Hats, scarves, and gloves are highly effective at blocking the cold.
 

Advice for Xinjiang Trip in December

1. If you have a plan to head to Hemu Village in December 2025, remember to allow extra time just in case. The roads to Hemu are often closed temporarily due to heavy snowfall. 
2. Considering some scenic areas may close on days with bad weather conditions. It is advisable to monitor weather forecasts and confirm that if your destination is open or not in advance.
3. Indoor heating systems are operational, making indoor spaces relatively warm. Be mindful of the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors, and adjust your clothing accordingly to prevent catching a cold. Additionally, indoor spaces become even drier due to the use of heating equipment, so try to book accommodations equipped with humidifiers.
