Temperature

As mentioned above, most areas in northern Xinjiang experience some rain in August. Regardless of intensity, the rain can significantly lower the temperature. Taking Ili and Urumqi as an example, at the beginning of the month, the daytime temperature may reach around 33 degrees Celsius (91 degrees Fahrenheit), but a single shower could bring it down to about 25°C (77°F). After, the temperature may rebound to around 30°C (86°F) on clear days. However, by the latter half month, after cooling, it rarely climbs back above 30°C (86°F). Altay experiences similar temperature fluctuations but maintains lower overall values: its daily high ranges from 20-30°C (68-86°F). Due to sparse precipitation, Turpan experiences minimal temperature variation, with daytime temperature typically dropping from around 40°C (104°F) to 35°C (95°F) over the month. For all these places, the temperature difference between day and night is large at about 10-15°C (18-27°F).

Southern Xinjiang has a slightly cooling trend, but this typically begins in the latter half month. Most areas maintain a daily high of around 35°C (95°F) during the first half. From mid-month onward, it gradually drops below 30°C (86°F). Compared with northern Xinjiang, the diurnal temperature variation here is more pronounced, reaching around 15°C (59°F).

Though declining, it is still long enough for your daily trip. Per day, you can enjoy about 9-10 hours of sunshine on average, thanks to the sunny weather of Xinjiang in August. When exposed to the sunshine, remember to take sun protection measures as the UV rays are quite strong, especially in southern Xinjiang.

Outfit Formula for Xinjiang Trip in August

Xinjiang August Clothes

Clothes for southern Xinjiang: In the daytime, thin and breathable summer clothes like T-shirts, tank tops, short shirts, dresses, and light pants are all perfect choices. Shorts are not recommended and dresses should be relatively long: without proper coverage, you will easily get sunburned when exposed to the sun. Additionally, lightweight sun protection jackets are also useful. When night comes, you need to put on a thin jacket. Prepare a thick jacket, like a 3-in-1 jacket, if you plan to visit high-altitude areas like the Pamir Plateau.

Clothes for northern Xinjiang: Above mentioned clothes are also OK to pack for a northern Xinjiang trip. However, on this basis, you also need to bring several long-sleeve shirts and thick trousers for possible rainy daytime with lower temperature. Additionally, during your trip in northern Xinjiang, a 3-in-1 jacket is an absolute must.

Shoes: High-top, waterproof, and slip-resistant boots are highly recommended for your 2026 Xinjiang trip in August. They are suitable not only for grassy areas but also for colder high-altitude regions and desert areas. For cultural attractions, like Kashgar Old City in Southern Xinjiang, comfortable and breathable sneakers or hiking shoes will suffice.

  Others:
1. Remember to bring high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed sun hat, and sunglasses, and wear them whenever it’s sunny.
2. August in Xinjiang is very dry, especially in southern Xinjiang, so body lotion and facial moisturizer are essential.

Advice for Xinjiang Trip in August

1. In August, many people visit Xinjiang to spend their summer vacations, with the main impact being a surge in accommodation demand. On one hand, hotel prices skyrocket; on the other, hotels with nice equipment tend to sell out quickly. Therefore, once you finalize your itinerary, book your hotels promptly. This situation generally eases by late August.
2. By late August, most grasslands begin to turn yellow, though just slightly. If you specifically want to see lush and vibrant greenery, plan your trip for early to middle August.

3. Southern Xinjiang climate is quite hot in early August. So, you are recommended to avoid visiting southern Xinjiang during this period. If you insist, remember to avoid scheduling outdoor attractions for the hottest midday hours. Persistent high temperature may also cause snowmelt in high mountain areas, causing the risk of mudslides, though the probability is low. For mountain destinations like Baisha Lake, start your itinerary early in the day, since mudslides, highly correlated with temperature, are most likely to occur after 14:00.
