Factors like low humidity and intense sunlight make the apparent temperature higher. Essentially, any sunny day’s daytime will be scorching. Does Xinjiang rain much in July?

Not really.

Southern Xinjiang receives very low rainfall, and it is likely that you don’t see a single drop during your trips. The low precipitation also results in extremely low humidity and dry air. As a result, dusty weather occasionally occurs.

Northern Xinjiang has more rainfall, but only marginally so. In most areas, such as Urumqi and Altay, the monthly rainfall totals only about 20-30 mm on average, with rainy days generally not exceeding 10 days. So, in general, northern Xinjiang is slightly more humid than southern Xinjiang, but still dry. However, Turpan is even drier than southern Xinjiang - it receives only 3 mm of precipitation on average this month.

Is July A Good Time to Visit Xinjiang?

For northern Xinjiang, July is a recommended visiting time. The weather is mild with no much rain, as mentioned above, providing good conditions for your outings. More importantly, the natural views like Nalati Grassland, Kanas Lake, and Sayram Lake are at their peak viewing period. The only thing that may lead to a less-than-perfect traveling experience is the possible huge crowds and soaring price during this summer vacation month.

For southern Xinjiang, July is not a good visiting time because most places are quite hot, except for the Pamir Plateau. If you really want to explore southern Xinjiang during this period, be sure to avoid outdoor activities during noon, the hottest part of the day. Additionally, drinking water frequently to stay hydrated is crucial.

What to Wear in Xinjiang in July 2026?

Xinjiang July Clothes

Clothes: Either to visit north or south Xinjiang, it’s advisable to pack several short-sleeved tops and lightweight long pants. Dresses are perfectly acceptable, but you need to wear a pair of not-too-thin leggings underneath, as grassy areas tend to have many mosquitoes and the UV rays are quite intense, which is also why shorts and short skirts are not recommended. Over these, be sure to layer a sun-protective shirt. If traveling at night, you may need to add a thin jacket. Additionally, high-altitude areas and rainy days with lower temperature make a 3-in-1 jacket necessary.

Shoes: For a northern Xinjiang trip, lightweight, breathable, waterproof, and easy-to-clean hiking shoes are highly recommended. Alternatively, you can bring a pair of casual shoes made from fabric that doesn’t get easily wet, and preferably an old pair that you won’t mind discarding if they get muddy while exploring grasslands. For southern Xinjiang, comfortable and thin sneakers are sufficient for places like Kashgar Old Town. However, if you plan to visit desert areas, high-top boots that can keep sand out are essential.

 Others:
1. Sun protection is the top priority this month. In addition to applying sunscreen, you are also recommended to wear sun hats and sunglasses.
2. When heading to the grassy area, don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent spray.
