Xishuangbanna Weather in January

The weather of Xishuangbanna in January is warm and dry, and a T-shirt and a light jacket are enough for a day tour. But nighttime temperatures are quite low, and you may feel a bit cool. Rainfall is scarce and sunshine is bright. Accounting for its lovely weather, January is one of the best times to visit the city. Just take the soaring travel costs and tourist numbers into consideration and plan ahead.

Warm Temperatures

Xishuangbanna’s climate in January feels comfortable and warm, with daytime highs of 19-24°C (66-75°F). In rare cases, its extreme high temperature reaches 30°C (86°F). Compared with most travel destinations in China and the Northern Hemisphere, where many people are still wearing thick down jackets, it is quite warm and can even be a bit hot in Xishuangbanna, especially under the bright sunshine.

But after the sunset or before the sunrise, the temperature drops significantly, with nighttime lows of 11-15°C (52-59°F), meaning you’ll experience a significant day-night temperature difference here. Additionally, frequent foggy weather in January makes the perceived temperature even cooler. Usually, temperatures begin to rise after 9:00 when the sun has risen high and the fog has cleared.

The city is well-known for its lush tropical rainforests. Visitors should notice that temperatures in the rainforest are approximately 3-5 degrees Celsius (5-9 degrees Fahrenheit) lower than in downtown. Therefore, be sure to dress warmly if there’s a hiking plan in the forest in the early morning.

Dry Season & Moderate Humidity

January is the dry season in Xishuangbanna, with an average precipitation of only 12 mm and 3 rainy days. So you’ll hardly meet any rain during your stay, which is perfect for outdoor exploration. Thanks to it, the air feels not humid any more, with an average humidity level of about 64%.

Frequent Foggy Weather

Despite a relatively lower humidity, it is still a bit wet in the early morning in January. This is because January is one of the months when fog occurs most frequently. There are 18 to 25 foggy days in this month, particularly in mountainous and river valley areas from night through early morning. In these regions, wind speeds are generally low year-round and there is abundant moisture in the air, so fog forms easily. But don’t worry - morning fog often signals that the day will be sunny. Plus, as mentioned above, by 9:00, the fog will gradually clear. Therefore, if you want to take impressive photos, you can wait until the fog lifts.

Long Sunshine Hours and Strong UV Rays

Due to limited rainfall in January, Xishuangbanna enjoys abundant sunshine hours, about 7 hours per day. During mid-day hours, the peak UV index reaches 12, making sun-protective measures necessary. Even if you are exposed to the sun for only 10 minutes, it’s likely that you will get a sunburn.

Is January a Good Time to Visit Xishuangbanna?

Yes, in terms of weather, January is a perfect month to taste the charm of Xishuangbanna. The daytime is warm, there are rarely rainy days, and the sunshine is bright. Whether you want to have a relaxed city walk tour or a rainforest hiking adventure, you’ll definitely have fun thanks to its pleasant weather.

Unfortunately, most people think the same way, leading to a surge of visitors flocking to the city for vacation. Therefore, the travel costs and tourist numbers would increase significantly, which might make your travel experience not ideal.

Xishuangbanna January Travel Highlights and Tips

1. January marks the winter vacation in China, and sometimes coincides with the Chinese New Year holiday. Coupled with its warm temperatures, Xishuangbanna has become a popular tourist place for a cold escape. Furthermore, Xishuangbanna is only accessible by plane or car. It’s so not surprising to find that hotel prices and flight tickets skyrocket. If you are on a tight budget, try to avoid visiting the city this month, or book hotels and plane tickets far in advance.
2. January is one of the peak blooming periods of tropical plants and flowers in Xishuangbanna, thanks to the favorable temperatures and low rainfall. The Tropical Botanical Garden is highly recommended for admiring countless tropical plants, such as Victoria Amazonica, red passionflower, yellow-haired lathyrus and large-flowered Datura. But this inevitably leads to long lines, so make sure to arrive early and hire a tour guide to ensure better experiences.
3. Wildlife is particularly active in January, especially Asian elephants, as it is their peak mating and calving season. For example, in January 2026, five newborn elephant calves were spotted in the Wild Elephant Valley area. Additionally, since January is the dry season and Wild Elephant Valley offers relatively abundant water, minerals, and food, it attracts herds of elephants to gather there, making them easier to be observed than in other times.
