Xishuangbanna’s weather in September is muggy and a bit hot, intensified by the humid air, which, though, is not unbearable. It is the end of the rainy season, and rainfall is still frequent but mostly short showers. Considering all, September is not a bad time to visit the city. In addition to the not very bad weather conditions, it’s the shoulder travel season with fewer tourists, and it is friendly to price-conscious travelers. 
In September of Xishuangbanna, temperatures gradually drop, with daily highs ranging from 26 to 29°C (79-84°F). The highest temperature usually doesn’t exceed 33°C (91°F). But the climate can make you feel a bit oppressive, due to the high humidity level. There are considerable temperature differences between day and night, about 8-12°C (14-22°F). So nights can be quite cool, with lows dropping to 21-23°C (70-73°F), when you may even need an additional layer. 

When it rains, temperatures drop slightly, especially during prolonged rainfall or when it is accompanied by cold air masses. This time, highs often fall by 3-6 degrees Celsius (5-10 degrees Fahrenheit). However, after the rain, the temperature rebounds and the humid air struggles to dissipate, so you may not necessarily feel cool. 
 ‌In Xishuangbanna, September marks the tail end of the rainy season. Rainfall intensity is lighter, and rainfall amounts decrease significantly, with an average monthly precipitation of 136 mm from 24 rainy days. Although it rains frequently - almost every day, the good news is that they’re mostly brief showers that don’t last long, and often in the afternoon or at night. 

However, there is also a high risk of heavy rainfall. Due to the influence of the monsoon and the lingering effects of typhoons, short bursts of heavy rain - with hourly rainfall reaching 40-60 mm - as well as lightning and localized strong winds do happen, which can easily trigger flash floods and urban flooding. Visitors planning outdoor excursions are advised to check the weather forecast in advance.
 The climate in Xishuangbanna in September is quite humid, with an average humidity level ranging from 80% to 90%. At midday, when temperatures are high, people who are sensitive to humid heat may feel sticky and uncomfortable; this tends to ease slightly when the temperature drops.
 In September, Xishuangbanna receives limited sunshine periods, about 3-4 hours per day, influenced by frequent rainy days. However, it doesn’t mean you can neglect sun protection, as clouds cannot totally block UV rays. Strong UV levels between showers are often reported. 
 Although not the best, it’s not a bad time for visitors to enjoy a relaxed holiday in Xishuangbanna. 

In terms of weather, although it is a bit muggy and humid during the day, it’s bearable. While rainy days are frequent, rainfall is mostly brief showers, which won’t interfere with your travel plan for a whole day. Plus, the rain can help cool you down and rejuvenate the rainforest. 

Moreover, September is a shoulder travel season. Even if you visit some popular attractions, there are far fewer tourists, and you don’t have to queue for a long time. Hotel rooms are easy to book and flight tickets are at reasonable prices. 
  Upper Clothing: During the daytime hours, you are advised to wear breathable, quick-drying T-shirts to deal with the humid air. As early mornings are a bit cool, remember to add a light jacket to stay comfortable. Also, it can protect your skin from the intense sun rays.

 Bottom Clothing: It’s ok to wear shorts or skirts on sunny days. If you plan to visit the rainforest, light hiking pants are more practical, as they can prevent mosquito bites and scratches from leaves and branches. 

 Footwear: A pair of breathable sneakers with a good grip is recommended, as the roads can be slippery due to the frequent rain. Crocs is also a good option - convenient and comfortable. But long rain boots are also required for a rainforest excursion, because there might be deep puddles after it rains. 

 Accessories: 
Due to frequent showers in September, it’s wise to take a portable umbrella with you. 
As insects are still prevalent, especially in the Tropical Botanical Garden, it’s essential to apply insect repellent. 
Sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat are necessary for sunny and even cloudy moments.

We recommend visiting the Flower Garden and the Vine Garden in the Tropical Botanical Garden for the lively scenery. Moreover, the hot and humid environment fosters a thriving fungal ecosystem, adding to the enjoyment of a rainforest hike. However, please refrain from picking them. 

2. September often coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival Holiday in China. In 2026, it is from September 25th to 27th. During the period, expect a minor peak travel period, with increasing tourists and travel costs.
