Day 2 Beijing
Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, A la carte lunch, Temple of Heaven. (B+L)
Great Wall of China
Photo by our client Ms. Michelle Jariabka
Your private journey starts from the world's largest urban square, Tiananmen Square. It covers an area of 44 square kilometers, spanning 880 meters from north to south and 500 meters from east to west. The square, which could hold 1,000,000 people at the same time, is an assembling place for celebrations in the traditional Chinese festivals and important events. On the other hand, the square is well-know for travelers because it is just the entrance to the splendid Forbidden City. According to Chinese history, except for the officials and royal family relatives, the ordinary people were not allowed to enter this imperial palace. This is why it is called Forbidden City. It is also a palace museum fully demonstrating the imperial life in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

With a great variety of dishes for you to choose from, we believe the a la carte lunch (valued at CNY150.00 per person and included in our price) today will appease your appetite. Your afternoon visit continues to the Temple of Heaven, an ancient majestic royal altar.

Meals: Western buffet breakfast, A la carte lunch
Day 3 Beijing
Mutianyu Great Wall with a round-trip cable car, Olympic Bird's Nest. (B)
Our travel consultant Lydia with her clients
Today you will take an excursion to Mutianyu Great Wall. It was initially set up as a fortification to keep away from being intruded by the invaders. There are 23 watchtowers distributed at close intervals along the wall. The small holes on the wall were used to shoot arrows. It is a landmark witnessing the great intelligence and hardship of ancient Chinese people. In order to obtain more time to appreciate the best part of this great masterpiece, we have included the round trip cable car for you. Lunch is on your own arrangement.

On the way back to the city center, we will pass by the Bird's Nest, namely the Olympic National Stadium and stop over there for a few minutes. You can take some pictures of this significant building from a distance. The last stop is a featured local market where you are able to find various traditional souvenirs.

Meals: Western buffet breakfast
 Friendly Tips

This tour includes the round-way cable car fees at Mutianyu Great Wall. However, if you are interested in taking the chairlift up and toboggan down the wall, we can also arrange that for you.
Day 4 Beijing - Xian
Summer Palace with boat ride on Kunming Lake, Hutong visit. A high speed train to Xian. Railway station to hotel transfer. (B)
A nice riding experience on the ancient City Wall
After breakfast at the hotel, we will first transfer you to visit the Summer Palace, the most fantastic attraction of which is the Long Gallery. Being seven hundred twenty-eight meters (796.2 yards) long, the Long Gallery artfully links Longevity Hill with Kunming Lake. In 1990 it was rated as the longest gallery in the world. Constructed along the natural terrain of Longevity Hill and the turns of Kunming Lake, the gallery offers a picturesque view at each step. Admiring the intricate paintings while listening to the old stories can make visitors learn a lot about the five-thousand-year-old Chinese culture. If weather permits, we will arrange a relaxing boat trip on Kunming Lake for you. Then you will experience a Hutong tour by rickshaw. Different from visiting the sites, a visit to Hutong area offers you an opportunity to walk into the traditional alleys and get acquainted with the local people's life there.

Lunch is on your own arrangement. After that, you will take a high speed train to the next destination of your 11 days China tour package - Xian. Our local guide will meet you at the railway station and accompany you to the hotel.

Meals: Western buffet breakfast
Day 5 Xian
Terracotta Amy Museum, Provincial History Museum, City Wall. (B)
Terracotta warriors
You will start the day tour from the famed Terracotta Army. The discovery of Qin Terracotta Army is a miracle of the world. Located 1,640 yards to the east of the Mausoleum of the first Emperor Qin Shihuang, the pits of Qin Terracotta Army were built to bury along with the emperor. By far three pits have been discovered where unearthed about 7,000 terracotta warriors and a large amount of war horses, chariots and weapons. The figures of the terracotta warriors symbolize the household cavalry to guard the underground imperial city. Lunch is not included today.

In the afternoon, you will visit the Shaanxi Provincial History Museum and ascend the City Wall. Unique historical and culture heritage of Shaanxi is undoubted worth the praise as treasure house of Chinese civilization, and Shaanxi History Museum is definitely a palace of art to display Shaanxi's history and culture and ancient civilization. There are as many as 370,000 antiquities collected in the 11,000-square-meter exhibition halls and 8,000-square-meters storage, ranging from prehistorical relics to that of the 1840s. Time spans more than one million years and the collection is superior in value, quantity, rank and species.

Meals: Western buffet breakfast
Day 6 Xian - Chongqing
Xian Museum and Small Wild Goose Pagoda. Fly to Chongqing, Ciqikou Village. Yangtze River tour begins at about 22:00. (B)
Captain's Welcome Party on the ship
This morning you will have a chance to see one of the most important surviving marks of the ancient capital Chang'an in the Tang Dynasty, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda including Xian Museum. Then you will head to Chongqing by flight. Our local guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to see Ciqikou Village. After that, we will transfer you to get on board the comfortable cruise. Your memorable Yangtze experience begins at 22:00 as the ship sets sail.

It will be very enjoyable to stroll in the tranquil forest park, breathe the fresh air and listen to birds singing. What's more, there are over 20 cultural attractions in the park which can make you gain a better understanding of Chinese traditional culture. Late in the afternoon, there will be a ceremonious Captain's Welcome Party waiting for your participation, and then enjoy a banquet dinner.

Meals: Western buffet breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 8 Yangtze River Cruise
Yangtze Three Gorges, An exciting excursion to Shennong Stream. (B+L+D)
The most essential part of your ship ride comes today. The ship will first sail through the short but grandiose Qutang Gorge and then the most brilliant Wu Gorge. In Wu Gorge, you will disembark at Wushan Daning River for an excursion to Shennong Stream. When you visit the verdant Shennong Stream, you will first take an electric boat for about 40 minutes. The scenery along the both tributaries is more comely and delicate compared with the splendid Three Gorges. The current of these sections becomes gentle and the water becomes clearer gradually. After that you will take a little pea-boat with some other guests (about 10 guests or more sharing a boat), rowed by local boatmen. The local guide, dressed in clothes of Tujia minority, may sing melodious folk songs with the boatmen for you along the way. It is advisable to follow the guide's instruction to wear your life jacket properly even though the stream seems not to be dangerous at all. It is a scenic joy to roam among the green mountains and blue waters. Get back to the ship and the cruise continues sailing into the western section of Xiling Gorge. Historically known for its tortuous channel, dense reefs and shoaly waters, Xiling Gorge is the longest and most dangerous gorge of the Yangtze River. After decades of improvements and the accomplishment of Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project, the river now flows more gently while the splendid landscape remains the same.

Meals: Western buffet breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

It boasts 40 scenic spots, such as Grand Rockery, Ancient Theater, Nine Dragons Pool, Nine Zigzag Bridge, Lotus Pool, Sanhui Hall and Dianchun Hall.

After enjoying an a la carte lunch (valued at CNY150.00 per person and included in our price) with the best Shanghai cuisine, you will visit the Bund and take a cruise on Huangpu River, which symbolizes and epitomizes the image of the city. Thank you for making this such a memorable visit to your beautiful country and its lovely people. Many other events took place, unplanned ones, which will remain engraved in our memories. All our guides were not only very professional, but they went out of their way to help us appreciate the different aspects of their city or region. They all had a great sense of humor, and we laughed a lot together as we compared our respective cultures; we felt, in each case, that Kitty (Beijing), Judy (Xi'an), Susan (Chengdu), and Sean (Shanghai) could have become personal friends, had we remained in China to live for a while; they were very easy to get along with, and made every aspect of our visit beautiful and interesting. Their knowledge and their patience were astounding.

All the meals were excellent. We especially enjoyed how the restaurants prepared vegetables, and we ate a lot of them: the cooks managed to keep the bright colors, and to keep them crunchy. We enjoyed chicken and prawns or shrimps, whatever the preparation. I liked the addition of peanuts to several meat dishes, as it offered a nice contrast in texture. In general, there was too much food, and we felt guilty to waste so much and not to be able to eat everything. Our favorite meal of all was the farewell dinner in Shanghai, it was more refined and more elegant than the others.
Our drivers were superb, even amazing: I would have been afraid to drive in city traffic in China as it is quite crazy, but they made us feel safe, and we were very impressed. One special driver deserves a unique mention: Mr. Wong, in Beijing. We especially admire contemporary architecture, and because Beijing was foggy on several of the days, we never got to really look at the Bird's Nest and at the Cube. As our last day in Beijing was clearer, on the way to the airport Mr. Wong drove us by both buildings; we were touched and very appreciative of his thoughtfulness, and we will never forget him and his initiative.

I am not exaggerating my praise of your work and your professionalism. I just want to let you know how successful everything was.

Overall we had an amazing holiday, better than any of us were expecting. The private trip made it so easy and we loved the flexibility. We will definitely come back and contact TCG company again.

TravelChina is simply an awesome and super sufficient tour agency. They organized our trip well. We were provided excellent guides in each city, and the hotel rooms were comfortable.

    Beijing (May 29 - 31)
    Local Guide: Maggie
Maggie performed her duties well. She is very pleasant and welcoming and was helpful in getting us settled at the hotel. One of the members landed at a different terminal than the one we were supposed to meet. Maggie was helpful enough to direct the driver to go to the other terminal to pick up that member. I think she represented TCG well and I am totally satisfied with her performance.

    Xi’an (June 1 - 2)
    Local Guide: Lola
Lola is a very entertaining and interactive tour guide who provided lots of commentaries during our visit. Unfortunately, the information provided was not always accurate according to some members who had been in Xi’an before. But at least, this is her positive side. Her English, while not perfect is acceptable. She told us that she learned English by self-study rather than going to a university. In that sense, she is commendable in her effort. Overall, our time in Xi’an was reasonably enjoyable.

    Chongqing (June 4)
    Local Guide: Janna
Our time at Chongqing was short due to fact that we took a later flight. So our time with Janna was very brief - basically consisted of picking up at airport, having dinner, and send off at the cruise ship. However, our impression of Janna was quite positive. Her English is good, and she has an excellent knowledge of Chongqing, which she was able to share with us in an entertaining way. She also got us to the cruise ship on time and in an orderly manner.

    Yangtze River Cruise (June 4 - 7)
    Local Guide: Howard
Howard was a very friendly guide. His English was near perfect. His knowledge of the Yangtze River is excellent. I understand that he has a duel role - he is an officer of the cruise ship and also represents TCG to take care of our group. Because of the dual role, he was not able to devote all his time to us. But every time he saw us, he was friendly and did offer to help if we need anything. We are satisfied with his performance.

    Yichang (June 7)
    Local Guide: Jacky
Our time at Yichang was also short. We only had about half a day there. Jacky did a good job of taking care of us during that time. Our flight to Shanghai was delayed several times due to severe weather. Jacky was helpful in assisting us to resolve the transportation problem. He was in constant touch TCG office in Xian in exploring different ways of getting us to Shanghai on time. He was good enough to stay with us at the airport until the delayed plane took off. I am particularly impressed with his dedication in this respect. I would give him a grade of “A” for being a helpful tour guide.

    Shanghai (June 8)
    Local Guide: Sean
The airport pickup and the airport send off by Sean went well. The only comment I wish to make is that I was a bit disappointed that Sean, after taking us to the hotel did not assist us in checking in into the hotel. I had to do it myself and sorted out a couple of misinformation in room booking.

Many thanks to Vera who was our private tour consultant. We have lots of happy memories of our holiday in China! The restaurants we were taken to were excellent. The food was delicious and our guides explained what the different dishes were and the order they should be eaten in! The meals on the Yangtze cruise boat were also excellent and particularly good value for money (considering the cost of the river cruise as a whole). My only slight criticism would be that non-Chinese people may find 3 or 4 days of Chinese food is a little too much especially as it is very different from the food they are used to eating at home. Some simple non-Chinese food on offer would be welcome for either lunch or dinner. The guides were first-class. Their English language skills were better than many English people, they spoke fluently with wide ranging vocabulary and were highly knowledgeable. The guide in Yichang also kindly assisted us at the railway station which was much appreciated. We highly appreciated the bottled water provided on each tour. The minibuses were clean with full air-conditioning and the drivers were friendly and helpful. I would pay special tribute to our guides in Chongqing and Yichang. Any tourist who is fortunate enough to have them as guides will enjoy a very fulfilling tour. I would also pay tribute to Vera and all the staff at Travel China Guide. 'Friendly,' 'helpful' and 'efficient' are the 3 best words to describe this company and its staff. Before booking our tours, every e-mail query was answered fully most often within 24 hours. No problem, question or task was too much trouble for them. During our holiday in China, all the arrangements made by the company worked out with prompt delivery of train tickets, meeting guides etc. It was a great pleasure to be able to meet Vera during our stay in Xian. If we travel to China again, I would certainly make the arrangements with Travel China Guide and would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone. ... More

We have just returned from our vacation, and we want to enthusiastically share how wonderful our vacation was. We recruited their services for our Yangtze River excursion, with the added days in Chongqing and Shanghai, Xian and Beijing, and everything couldn't have gone more smoothly.
We were greeted at the airport in Chongqing by our local guide, Elle, who was already there and waiting for our arrival with a sign & a smile. Her English was excellent, and her disposition was cheerful. We began our visit to the Panda Zoo in Congqing, which was a very good choice: it was interesting to see the pandas, and a very friendly way to become acquainted with Elle and Chongqing. Afterward, we were brought to our hotel and Elle handled all of the check-in procedures for us - flawlessly. It is indeed a very impressive hotel, one of the best hotels we experienced throughout our month-long vacation in China. The rooms were very clean & comfortable, and the meals were absolutely fantastic! We certainly would want to return to this hotel during another vacation. On the morning of our embarkment of the cruise ship, Elle promptly came by and brought us to the ship. She accompanied us onboard and waited until we were comfortably settled in. She's an excellent tour guide and made a very favorable impression of Travel China Guide.
The Yangtze cruise will surely live in our memories as one the most remarkable travel experiences we have ever had. The cruise ship provided a truly first class experience. Everything was extremely well organized, and our day trips were outstanding. The food was very, very good and very, very plentiful. The crew provided cultural events and entertainment, and everyone was friendly and helpful. We feel we experienced the Gorges, the Dam and the various sites along the Yangtze with very detailed tours and comfortable accommodations. English was spoken fluently by all.
When we arrived at our ship's destination, Yichang, we learned that our local guide had already called ahead to verify our expected time of arrival. His name is Sean, and he was very friendly and enthusiastic to speak to us. His English was perfect! He came onboard and helped us to the van that was waiting for us, and we headed into Shanghai by high-speed train. Another guide called Ryan greeted us at the station. On the way to hotel, we chatted about the city and the sites, and he encouraged us to ask as many questions as we wanted. He was very interesting and very informative. After touring the Bund and the major shopping streets, Ryan took us to the old part of the city, and the next day we were brought to the Shanghai art museum, which we enjoyed very much. He was sensitive to our interests, and we never felt rushed or overwhelmed. When our museum visit was over, we had lunch at a very good restaurant and Ryan asked about our specific likes and dislikes regarding food. He helped us order dishes he knew we would enjoy. It was terrific. He met us at the conclusion of our lunch, and we continued with some site-seeing for the afternoon. He was on time, ready and efficient. He even called the airline to verify our flights, and helped us get settled in at the airline check-in counter. We couldn't have asked for a more personal and thoughtful guide. The following days in Beijing and Xian are both truly amazing, and we also appreciate the local guide Barry and Susan. We will be sharing this information with our friends here in the States, and we're informing our New York travel agent about your first class service. We will certainly do our part in sharing our very wonderful experiences. We look forward to further vacations with your assistance, and thank you for a most memorable vacation!

We have never had a better experience working with a tour planning group. The most significant thing was the prompt (almost immediate) response from you to our every question. Very few groups are as efficient. The connections of our tour were easy and the tour guides were friendly, well-informed and extremely helpful. Especially Joan Huang who was able to reschedule our flight back to Beijing to an earlier time. She went out of her way to help us and we appreciated her rare ability to get things done. The cruise also was very enjoyable and we would not hesitate to contact you again for any help we should need in the future. Thank you for everything. ... More

First of all, I am very glad to have gone ahead with my booking through your company. Since it was my first experience with TCG I didn't really know what to expect about the meals. Hence, I did not elaborate on it. But upon arriving China and got the idea from our guide of what would be served at the 5-star hotel's dinner, we thought a local specialty would be a better choice. So, we gave a miss to the arranged dinner and asked our guide to take us to a good local restaurant serving good local specialty, like 'special fish head steamboat'. Our guide and the driver were very helpful - we enjoyed our dinner at a very nice environment overlooking the opera house. Meals at Shanghai were great - right choice of dishes! If I may suggest, you should emphasize on the local specialties of each city of China. Travelers have had enough of hotel food the buffet style. What we need is to taste the different food at the different place especially the local delicacies by the local folks. We were met by the lady guide when we arrived at Chongqing. She was very warm and professional. We like her approach and effort to make us feel comfortable and we were indeed very comfortable with her. She communicates and explains well both English and Chinese (even though I asked for English speaking guide we do communicate in Chinese - with both languages we feel more comfortable). She is very alert and helpful too. She saw us through the cruise ship and settled before saying goodbye. In Yichang, we met by a gentleman guide and he was too a very nice guide, helpful and we were very comfortable with him. He saw us through the airport, checked-in and left for departure hall before saying goodbye. Frankly, we have great experience with our guides. Sadly, I have forgotten their names. The same things go to the drivers - they were too very helpful. Both, drivers and guides, they have a teamwork attitude. Is it possible that I ask for the same travel counselors in my future reservation? ... More

    Please find our reviews below:

Meals: Without exception we found the meals of better than average quality. Quantity was greater than what we could consume. The guide in Beijing on each day purchased different fruit in addition to the food supplied by the restaurant which was a nice touch. As we arrived at Shanghai in the evening, without having eaten, the guide took us to a restaurant adjacent to the hotel and was prepared to wait until we had finished the meal, to return us to the hotel. However, as it was right next door we were able to walk back our selves. She was prepared to do the same on the next evening, which we thought was beyond what would have been expected of the guide.

Guides: All guides had a positive attitude to their work. Without exception their English was fantastic and we had no difficulty in understanding them. All guides had an excellent knowledge of the places we visited, remarkably so as in at least one instance she was a guide for an area that she had not been brought up, but had come to live there to work. We were able to ask them all sorts of obscure questions about culture, society etc and they knew the answer.

Cars: The cars were in every case kept immaculately clean, with no rubbish. The drivers were in every case polite and well presented.

Hotels: The only issue we had was with the hotel in Beijing. The other hotels we had stayed in during the tour and prior to the tour, had internet access. This hotel also did not supply 1 or 2 bottles of water.

Tours: The guides were able to vary the itinerary depending upon local circumstances. For example the guide in Chongqing suggested we visit the Hongya Cave, which was not in the intinerary, but was one of the nicest places that we had visited in China.

We had a good time. We were organized and moved as any large group would be. On one excursion, we had a good guide. I am about 60% fluent in Chinese, but not literate in Chinese. Even so, I was part of Chinese groups and I managed well enough. I didn't make any friends with the other travelers, which was too bad. I had relatives traveling with me, so I had people to talk to. I felt we spent too much time and emphasis on the Great Dam, but I understand the pride in the achievement.
