Leshan Weather in December

Leshan has a cold and damp climate in December, despite limited rainfall. In early mornings and late nights with higher humidity, it feels much colder than the actual temperature indicates. Snowfall may occur in the mountainous areas, offering a spectacular snowy view. December is a shoulder travel season, and there are fewer tourists and lower travel costs, suitable for visitors who have limited budgets.

Cold and Damp

Leshan’s weather in December is cold and damp, with daytime highs often being 11-16°C (52-61°F). But if you encounter cold air masses, it’s possible to experience several days with daytime highs under 10°C (50°F). In rare cases, the daytime temperature can even drop to only 4°C (39°F). Plus, Leshan experiences a humid climate this month, with an average humidity level of 76%. The humid climate, coupled with frequent overcast days and winds, make the perceived temperature 2-3°C (4-5°F) lower than the actual temperature. At night, the lowest temperature usually ranges from 3 to 12°C (37-54°F). If strong cold air sets in, the lowest temperature may drop significantly to zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). In high-altitude and river-valley areas, such as the Leshan Giant Buddha, there may even be frost in the early morning.

The temperature difference between day and night depends on the weather conditions. On sunny or cloudy days, once the sun sets, the temperatures drop dramatically, with a day-night temperature gap as large as 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Celsius). If you encounter rainy weather for several days or thick fog, the cloud cover acts as an insulator, significantly reducing the temperature difference - sometimes to less than 1 degree Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit).

At Mount Emei, the weather is much colder than in the downtown areas. On the Golden Summit, with an altitude over 3,000 meters (9,800 feet), the daytime highs hover between -5 and 3°C (23-37°F). Due to the open terrain and strong winds, the actual temperature felt at the mountaintop is 3-5°C (5-7°F) lower than the forecast temperature, making it cold, and biting. Moreover, there is a high probability of snow here in December. After snowfall, temperatures would drop sharply. Thus, winter clothing is essential.

Dry Season

December is the dry season in Leshan, and the average monthly precipitation is only 13 mm over 9 rainy days. In downtown Leshan and at lower elevations, it typically does not snow this month; light drizzle and light rain are the norm, and sometimes it accompanies with mists. This rarely impacts your outdoor explorations.

However, at higher elevations, such as the summit of Mount Emei, there is a relatively high probability of sleet or light snow. Towards late December, you may even have a chance to admire spectacular snowy scenery. Even if there is no heavy snowfall, rime ice and icicles can be seen when warm, moist air currents or clear weather conditions prevail.

Daytime Hours and Sunshine Hours

Sunrise Time: 7:44-8:00
Sunset Time: 18:08-18:15

Due to frequent gray days in December, Leshan receives very limited sunshine hours, about 2.5 hours per day on average. Thus, the ultraviolet rays are relatively weak due to thick clouds. Even when the sun comes out during midday periods, the UV Index only reaches about 2-3. But the UV intensity would see an obvious increase in highlands, with the peak UV index of 3-4, making sun-protective measures necessary.

Leshan has shorter and shorter daylight periods this month, hovering around 10.5 hours. This requires visitors to arrange their travel plans wisely. Many attractions would shorten their opening hours accordingly. For example, the Leshan Giant Buddha in December opens from 8:00 to 17:30. But don’t worry, it also provides night tour service, so you can enjoy a completely different travel experience. Just remember to add layers to stay warm at night.

Is December a Good Month to Visit Leshan?

It’s up to you, as there are both advantages and disadvantages when it comes to visiting Leshan in December.

Leshan’s climate in December is cold and damp. Visitors who are not accustomed to this humid climate probably wouldn’t feel comfortable for outdoor explorations. Plus, frequent overcast days and thick fog in the early morning may also diminish the natural scene.

However, as mentioned before, Mount Emei offers a stunning snowy scene on the top. Moreover, December offers a high probability of seeing the sea of clouds at Mount Emei. In addition, December is a quiet month, as there are no public holidays. Therefore, visitors will have a better experience, with shorter wait times at popular attractions and lower overall travel costs.

What to Pack for Leshan Trips in December 2026?

Leshan December Clothes
Upper Clothes: Entering the winter season, Leshan in December requires warm clothing, including thermal underwear, fleece-lined hoodie or sweater, and a windbreaker or a thick overcoat. If you want to conquer Mount Emei, it’s highly recommended to add a down layer and replace a normal overcoat with a professional windproof and waterproof 3-in-1 windbreaker.

Bottom Clothing: A pair of thick jeans or long pants with thermal underwear is suitable for city walks. But mountain hiking tours make fleece-lined hiking pants essential. It is best if they are waterproof to block the damp air.

Shoes: Steps and roads can be slippery because of humid air, so it’s necessary to wear non-slip sneakers. For climbers, it’s a must to wear slip-resistant hiking boots or snow boots. In case of snowy weather or icy trails on Mount Emei, you’ll also need to bring crampons as well.

 Accessories:
1. Staying warm is the top priority, especially in the high-altitude areas. So don’t forget to pack scarves, gloves and warm hats.
2. In case of occasional showers, a raincoat is a practical item.
3. For occasional sun exposure, you may pack sunscreen.

Travel Recommendations and Tips

1. December is the prime season for viewing the sea of clouds at Mount Emei. The chances of seeing the wonderful scene are highest the day after it has just stopped raining or the day following a drop in temperature, as the convergence of cold air and warm, humid air currents creates the perfect conditions for a magnificent sea of clouds. Plus, the best view windows are 9:00-10:00 and 15:00-17:00. If you are lucky enough to encounter sunny hours, you might spot a spectacular combination of sunlight, sea of clouds, and rime ice.
2. If you have difficulty getting up early to catch a sunrise view on Mount Emei, you are highly recommended to choose a hotel on the Golden Summit with a view of the sunrise. It’s easy to book a room in December, the off-season. But it’s pricey as usual.
3. Be sure to check weather alerts before traveling to Mount Emei, to avoid extreme weather conditions.
