Leshan Weather in June

Leshan’s weather in June is not scorching, but it feels a bit muggy and oppressive, especially during midday hours. After the sunset, temperatures cool down greatly. As in the rainy season, it’s normal to experience sudden downpours, leading to slippery steps on the mountain. Even though, June is a busy month for tourism, meaning higher travel costs and crowded attractions. Considering all these, Leshan in June is not recommended for visiting.

Hot, Even Oppressive

The climate of Leshan in June is quite hot, showing the arrival of summer. The daytime highs range from 24 to 35 degrees Celsius (75-95 degrees Fahrenheit), and the highest temperature can even reach 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). Considering the plenty of water vapor in the air, high heat triggers the muggy feeling. If the weak ones, like the elder and the children stay outdoors for too long during 10:00-16:00, it’s likely to suffer heatstroke, so it’s best to take regular breaks under shaded areas.

With lows of 19-23°C (66-73°F), early mornings tend to be cooler, which means starting your sightseeing early is a good idea to avoid hot weather. Besides, occasional showers also help to cool things down. However, after the rain clears up, temperatures tend to rebound quickly, coupled with lots of moisture, which actually makes the air feel even more stifling.

Mount Emei is a great place to escape the summer heat: the foot of the mountain feels mild, with highs of 20-28°C (68-82°F); the halfway of the mountain feels quite cool, with highs of 15-25°C (59-77°F); the climate of the summit is a bit cold, with highs of 10-20°C (50-68°F), making a windbreaker necessary.

Rainy Season

June is the first phase of the rainy season in Leshan, with an average precipitation of 158 mm from 17 rainy days. The rain is mainly in the form of convective rainfall: short-lived heavy downpours, occasionally with thunder, lightning, and strong winds, which often occur at midnight and early morning. Therefore, you don’t have to worry too much. But it’s also possible to experience continuous rainfall for several days.

The highland area in Mount Emei has more changeable and severe weather than the downtown: it’s more likely to experience sudden rainfall or thunderstorms with strong gusts, causing potential dangers, such as slippery roads, rockfalls, heavy fog, and even flooding. Thus, it’s recommended to check the real-time weather alerts before going there.

Humidity

Leshan in June has an average humidity of 62%, which is the lowest level throughout the year. But some visitors from the drier climate still think it’s quite humid and even oppressive, especially around noon when the sunshine is bright. After rain, the humidity would spike, reaching over 90%.

Daytime Hours and Sunshine Hours

Sunrise Time: 6:00-6:08
Sunset Time: 20:02-20:11

Leshan in June enjoys quite long daytime periods, allowing visitors to explore the city at a relaxed pace. However, if you plan to catch a sunrise at Mount Emei, be sure to plan your schedule wisely: as the sun rises so early, you are advised to reach Leidongping at least around 2:30, which also offers hotel rooms and tents for visitors who want to stay overnight there. A nice reminder: Catching a perfect sunrise takes luck. Sometimes, when you first set out from Leidongping, the sky is clear and stars are glistening, but by the time you reach the Golden Summit, the thick fog rolls in.

Influenced by the rainy season, Leshan receives limited sunshine hours in June, only 2.5-3.5 hours per day on average. Despite that, the UV rays are surprisingly intense, particularly when it’s sunny around 10:00-16:00, with a peak UV index of 8-11. Visiting these outdoor attractions, like the Golden Summit of Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha, requires special sun-protective measures: sunscreen plus a sun-protective jacket. On rainy or cloudy days, the UV rays remain about 5-7, which are also unignorable.

Is June a Good Time to Visit Leshan?

Unfortunately, not. June is not a perfect time to visit Leshan.

On the one hand, Leshan’s climate in June can feel a bit oppressive at midday, due to high heat and humidity. Plus, June is the rainy season: occasional rainfall can make the steps on the mountain path quite slippery, which makes the climbing dangerous.

On the other hand, June is a pretty busy month, when many graduate students tend to travel around. Leshan is well-known as a tourist city, which undoubtedly attracts numerous visitors. Thus, famous attractions, such as the Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei, are likely to be packed; hotel rooms are difficult to book at a reasonable price and flight tickets can rise significantly.

What to Pack for Leshan Trips in June 2027?

Leshan June Clothes
 Clothes:
In the downtown area, visitors are advised to wear comfortable summer clothes, including T-shirts, skirts, dresses, and shorts. To handle the intense sunshine and occasional cool moments in the early morning, it’s recommended to wear a light jacket or a sun-protective shirt.

For visitors who want to visit Mount Emei, layering is essential due to the temperature drop caused by the altitude rise. Please prepare these items: a quick-dry short-sleeved shirt or long-sleeved shirt, a waterproof windbreaker, and a pair of hiking pants or quick-dry pants. In case of rain and cold temperatures on the summit, it’s wise to pack a thin down-filled layer to stay warm.

 Footwear:
Leshan’s attractions are mainly outdoors and require lots of walking, so it’s highly recommended to wear a pair of non-slip hiking sneakers to deal with the humid and rainy weather.

 Accessories:
1. As June is in the rainy season, rain gear is a necessity.
2. To ensure a smooth and safe trip when climbing Mount Emei, trekking poles or bamboo sticks are practical items, as the road can be slippery after rain.
3. It’s essential to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sun hat.
4. Mosquitoes are quite prevalent, particularly in the forests and by the river, so mosquito repellent is very important.

Travel Recommendations and Tips

1. In June, there are various flowers in full bloom. Here are some places for sightseeing and photography:
(1) The area around the Great Buddha Zen Temple and Taiyang Village at the foot of Mount Emei is in full bloom with lotus flowers. If you’re not in a hurry, you can enjoy the flowers first before starting your hike.
(2) In Shuangfu Town, just a 10-to-20-minute drive from the Leshan Giant Buddha, hydrangeas look absolutely stunning, so you can stop by for a short visit to enjoy the beautiful view.
(3) June marks the tail end of the rhododendron blooming season, when you still have a chance to spot a few lingering blooms around the summit of Mount Emei in early June.

2. The Leshan Giant Buddha is a must-visit spot and is popular all year round. To avoid the crowds, you are advised to get up early, when the sunshine isn’t very harsh, and there are only a few people. In this way, you can take the perfect photos. By around 10:00, the crowds start to gather. If you have difficulty getting up early, you can also take a night tour to avoid the crowds and stifling heat. However, if there’s a downpour, the scenic area will cancel the night tour.

3. Considering June is a peak travel month, it’s always a good idea to book the attraction ticket in advance. For your information, starting May 23, 2026, and till the end of 2027, due to renovation and upgrade work, only 8,000 tickets will be sold daily for the Golden Summit area at Mount Emei.
