Harbin Subway Line 2

Jiangbei University Town – Meteorological Observatory

(Identification Color: Green         )

Harbin Metro Line 2 connects the north bank of the Songhua River area with the old urban districts of Jiangnan. It is recognized as China's first smart metro line built for extreme cold regions and the country's first underground transit tunnel to cross the Songhua River.

Extending in the north-southeast direction and with a total length of 29 kilometers (18 miles), Harbin subway line 2 runs from Jiangbei University Town to Meteorological Observatory, passing by several passenger transportation hubs like North Railway Station and Harbin Railway Station. Besides, Harbin metro line 2 covers several popular scenic areas in the city, such as Ice and Snow World, Sun Island and Central Street. Its signature cyan-green identification color was inspired by the iconic green dome of Harbin's St. Sophia Church, conveying a sense of premium elegance.

Central Street Station

What you'll see: The station's Roman columns rise from the walls, European-style awnings shade the concourse, and intricate wrought-iron floral patterns trace the archways. Most strikingly, 31 independent electronic screens cycle through the stories of the historic street's diverse architectural styles, each telling the past and present of these buildings. Look up and you'll also be amazed by the European-style chandeliers of the painted caisson ceilings.

Surroundings: Central Street Pedestrian Street, St. Sophia Church, Stalin Park, the Middle East Railway Bridge

Harbin Railway Station

What you'll see: Arched colonnades, ceramic-tiled walls, and aluminum cornices mirror the century-old Harbin Railway Station above. Classical European-style pendant lamps cast a warm glow over simplified caisson ceilings. On the platform wall, the massive art installation Cycle tells Harbin's railway story: the very first locomotive of the Chinese Eastern Railway is rendered in relief, with archival photos behind them documenting four major reconstructions of the station.

People's Square Station

What you'll see: Above the columns of the station, an enormous dome in yellow-and-green saturated color blocks draws your eye upward, while stained-glass panels straight out of a Gothic church filter color onto the platform. The art wall depicts a musical staff flowing across the mural, and notes dancing among Western orchestral instruments, traditional Chinese strings, keyboards, and the Manchu octagonal drum. It's a visual ode to Harbin's identity as the "City of Music."

Shimao Avenue Station

What you'll see: This is the first stop after crossing from Songhua River’s south bank to north bank, and it announces your arrival in Harbin New District. At the threshold between concourse and platform stand oversized old-style clocks and a giant compass, the compass needle aligned precisely with true north above ground, symbolizing both the moment of the station's birth and the forward momentum of the new district.

Sun Island Station

What you'll see: Sun Island Station is the only atrium-structured metro station in Harbin. Look up as you ride the escalator: the ceiling opens into a painted sky of blue and white clouds, backlit to mimic the crystalline "Harbin blue." European wrought-iron canopies arch over the escalators, their filigree echoing the garden pavilions above ground. The floor itself is inspired by piano key, turning your walk to the platform into a quiet stroll through an outdoor melody. You feel the island's scenery flowing down from the surface into the underground.
