 Wuhan in January is the coldest all year round, with its average temperature ranging from about 0 to 8 degrees Celsius (32 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit). During the day, the weather is generally cold, and the highest temperature is between about 0 and 15°C (32 to 59°F). In such a condition, people may feel not so comfortable when staying outdoors for a long time. In this month, the climate of Wuhan is mainly affected by the northwest monsoon, which leads to temperature drops. On some days, the lowest temperature of the city can decrease below 0°C (32°F) and even to -6°C (21°F), making rivers freeze and some road surfaces slippery before sunrise.
 In January, Wuhan just receives a little precipitation of about 43 mm, and the intensity is not high. Precipitation days amount to about 9 in this month, and it mainly rains slightly or moderately. Fleece can also happen, bringing some inconvenience to your sightseeing. But in view of the temperature condition, snow is basically hard to accumulate in the daytime.
 With the high humidity of about 77%, the climate of Wuhan in January is quite damp. On cold days with precipitation, excessive moisture causes lower sensible temperature of people. Once it winds, people feel even colder and uncomfortable outdoors.

Sunrise and sunset time on this day are respectively at around 07:15 and 17:58, which is the earliest and the latest in the entire month. Given this, not too many activities can be arranged within the relatively short daytime, let alone having a leisurely tour in a day.
 In consideration of the cold and damp weather, it’s not suggested to travel to Wuhan in January. Natural scenery in frigid winter is not so varied and attractive, and your travel experience is thus affected to some extent.

On the plus side, fewer visitors choose to visit Wuhan in this month, resulting in the low season of the city. If you don’t mind the weather conditions, you can still have a relatively tranquil tour in Wuhan, 2026, and will spend less on accommodation.
 Warm winter clothes: Thermal underwear, a woolen sweater, and a padded / down coat are suitable tops. To keep legs warm, wear thermal leggings and thick long pants such as jeans.

Non-slippery shoes: Thick sneakers and cotton boots are both good choices, as long as they are anti-slippery to cope with some slippery road surfaces.

Warm accessories: Wear a woolen hat, a swarf, and gloves based on your own need.
 1.    It’s suggested to arrange open-air activities on sunny days in higher temperature. In brilliant sunshine, to relieve the discomfort caused by coldness, cycling around the East Lake is the best thing to do. Tall metasequoia trees with brownish-red leaves and fragrant wintersweet flowers are two highlights in the attraction this month. In addition, the city’s landmark Yellow Crane Tower is unmissable, and it’s highly recommended to schedule this stop around noon. Before the end of the daytime, don’t forget to make good use of the clear weather and watch the sunset view on the imposing Yangtze River Bridge. 

2.    On colder days with precipitation, indoor attractions are better places to go. For example, you can visit the Hubei Provincial Museum to view the 2,400-year-old sword and chime bells in a large size. Wuhan further boasts delicious snacks such as lotus root soup, and Hubu Alley gathering plenty of restaurants and stalls is a well-known destination for foodies.

3.    Occasionally, the air of Wuhan is slightly polluted and smog may affect visibility. So remember to pack a mask into your luggage.

4.    For those who want to enjoy snow scenery, in case that the snow may melt during the day, it’s suggested to view it at dawn in lower temperature and also a serene atmosphere, and take necessary measures to keep warm.
