Sichuan Weather in April

Overall, Sichuan’s weather in April is mild. Despite occasional rainfall or snowfall, abundant sunshine hours make it perfect for outdoor activities. It is also a good time to appreciate spring flowers like peach blossoms. 
 

Temperature 

Chengdu Plain enjoys cozy and comfortable daytime temperatures, with highs of 23-28 degrees Celsius (73-82 degrees Fahrenheit). By mid-April, warm days with daytime highs over 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) are quite common. But there is a considerable day-and-night temperature difference: about 12 °C (54°F) on average and 20 °C (70°F) in maximum. Therefore, you need to adjust clothes accordingly. 
 
In most cases, the climate of northwestern Sichuan is also quite mild in April, but it is possible to experience sudden temperature drop. For example, Jiuzhaigou in April witnesses a quite significant daily high temperature fluctuation, ranging from 12-31°C (54-88°F). Besides, the temperature gap between day and night often is over 10°C (50°F). During the mid-day, when the sunlight throws on you, you would feel particularly warm. However, after the sunset or on an overcast day, the perceived temperature could drop to around 5°C (41°F). Despite gradually warm climate in this area, you can still watch the lingering snow on the top of mountain. 
 
Southwestern valleys remain warm this month. During mid-day, you might even feel a bit hot, with highest temperature often over 30°C (86°F).

Chengdu: 44 mm over 13 days 
Jiuzhaigou: 55 mm over 15 days 
Daocheng: 56 mm over 10 days

Sichuan witnesses a slightly rainy climate in April, but it rarely impacts your outdoor plans as long as you take umbrellas with you. 
 
In general, the rain in Chengdu Plain is mostly in the form of light and moderate rain. In its surrounding mountainous areas, such as Mount Qingcheng and Mount Emei, it’s possible to see heavy rain. Thus, don’t forget to check the forecast before your visit and try to stay in town in rainy days. 
 
Northwestern Sichuan including Jiuzhaigou in April receives more precipitation, dominated by short showers. But it’s still possible to experience light snow. 
 
April is the last month of rainy season in southwestern Sichuan, so Panzhihua experiences pretty limited rainfall.

Due to increasing precipitation, northwestern and eastern Sichuan have a quite humid environment in April, especially Chengdu. But don’t worry. Thanks to the pleasant temperature, the relatively high humidity actually makes air fresher.

In April, Sichuan enjoys prolonged days, at least 12.5 hours. Ample daytime hours allow you to enjoy your trip at a leisurely pace. 
 
Most parts of Sichuan receive considerable sunlight hours: about 9 hours in Chengdu and 8 hours in Daocheng. Longer sunshine hours make outdoor scenery even more beautiful. However, it’s important to note that in western high-altitude areas like Jiuzhaigou, the UV rays are strong. Therefore, you’d better apply sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Even in the Sichuan Basin, where elevations are lower and cloudy days are common, UV exposure should not be overlooked. 
 

What to Wear in Sichuan in April 2026

Upper Clothing: Long-sleeve shirts and light jackets are usually enough in Chengdu. And it’s ok for girls to wear a long-sleeve dress paired with a light jacket on a bright day. If you plan to explore northwestern areas, you are advised to adopt this outfit: a quick-dry inner shirt, a warm sweater, and a wind-proof jacket. 
 
Bottom Clothing: Both jeans and sweatpants are suitable for Sichuan’s climate in April. If you want to wear a dress, don’t forget to pair with leggings. 
 
Footwear: A pair of comfortable sneakers goes well with most of the above outfits, and it’s easy on your feet when walking. Girls who want to match with the long dress, a pair of thin and short boots are recommended. 
 
Accessories: 
Sun-protective items: sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat. 
Rain gear: an umbrella or a rain coat. 
 

Travel Advice

1. Jiuzhaigou Valley National Park extends its opening hours since April, from previous 08:30 -17:00 to 08:00 - 17:00. It’s best to enter the spot right around 08:00 to avoid tourist crowds. 
2. In Jiuzhaigou Valley National Park from early April to mid-April, peach blossoms are in full bloom. Don’t miss Rizegou Valley in the park, where vast stretches of peach blossoms line against the primeval forest and snow-capped mountains.
3. During the Tomb Sweeping Festival Holiday in early April each year, Dujiangyan hosts Water Splashing Festival. Visitors can also witness traditional sacrificial ceremonies, folk dances and various cultural performances. But it’s worth noting that tickets during this period often sell out quickly, so be sure to book in advance.
