Sichuan Weather in June

June marks the arrival of the rainy season in Sichuan as monsoon winds sweep across the province. Rainfall increases notably in Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, and other regions, while temperatures begin to show the intensity of summer. Around midday, you can feel quite hot: short sleeves are usually sufficient for daytime wear.

Temperature

Eastern Sichuan, also known as Sichuan Basin, turns hot in June, with daily highs around 28-33°C (82-91°F). Take the example of Chengdu: The city typically experiences about seven days in June when temperatures exceed 35°C (95°F). In June 2025, Chengdu even recorded a scorching 38°C (100°F). Since heat peaks around 14:00, it’s best to avoid outdoor activities during this time and take precautions against heatstroke.

In contrast, Northwestern Plateau enjoys a milder climate because of its high altitudes. For instance, in Jiuzhaigou, it experiences the daytime highs around 19-29°C (66-84°F). The large day-night temperature difference means mornings can be chilly - sometimes as low as 5-8°C (41-46°F). A windproof jacket or light down coat is essential for early mornings. However, when the sun breaks through, it can be quite warm, but the tree’s shade offers an instant sense of cool relief. Occasional rain showers may bring a cool sense and noticeable temperature drop.

The southeast area of Sichuan in June is much cooler than other areas in Sichuan, with the highest temperature hovering around 27°C (81°F). Therefore, it’s a nice place to escape the heat in summer.

June sees a sharp rise in rainfall across Sichuan due to monsoon influence.

The Sichuan Basin, especially the areas around Chengdu, experiences frequent cloudy days and scattered showers, often accompanied by thunderstorms. It rarely experiences prolonged downpours - usually only once or twice a month. Therefore, your trip is rarely impacted by the rainy weather. Even if it’s raining heavily, you can go for indoor activities, such as visiting the Sanxingdui Museum or exploring Chengdu’s teahouses and hot pot restaurants.

Northwestern Sichuan, too, steps into its rainy season in June. The rainfall intensity varies with altitude: you may notice lighter rain at one spot and heavier rain just a few hundred meters away. But don’t worry: short but intense showers have limited impact on your trip. Light rain actually brings refreshing views: it enhances the lush greenery and serenity of Jiuzhaigou Valley National Park.

Southwestern Sichuan in June receives more frequent rain, in the form of showers and heavy downpours, which is one of the reasons why it is a bit cool.

Humidity

Chengdu: 76 %
Jiuzhaigou: 69 %
Daocheng: 78 %
Panzhihua: 73 %

In general, most places in Sichuan become obviously much more humid caused by its rainy weather in June.

Sunlight Hours and Daytime Hours

Sunrise Time: 6:00-6:04
Sunset Time: 20:01-20:10

Sichuan in June enjoys the longest daylight time throughout the year, about 14 hours on average. Thus, visitors can visit more attractions in a day or you may prefer sightseeing at a relatively relaxed pace, whether you want to explore popular cultural spots, like Jinli Street, Wuhou Temple and Kuanzhai Alley, or the natural landscapes, such as Jiuzhaigou and Mount Qingcheng.

But you need to notice that some attractions won’t prolong their operating hours in June. After a full day packed with wonderful sightseeing activities, why not grab a seat at a Chengdu authentic tavern and have a break while listening to local folk songs?

While Chengdu in June only receives around 4 hours of sunshine, it’s worth noting that the maximum UV index can reach 11. The sunshine in Jiuzhaigou can be harsher because of its high altitude and thin air. Therefore, never forget to apply sunscreen.

Upper Clothing: Lightweight short sleeves and cotton-linen blend shirts are perfect for warm daylight temperatures in Chengdu and surrounding areas, as well as the southwestern region. Considering cool mornings and evenings, it’s best to prepare a light jacket to stay comfortable. If you are going to explore high-altitude areas, a windbreaker is needed.

Bottom Clothing: It’s ok to wear summer pants or shorts for the Sichuan Basin and southwestern region. Female visitors can try on stylish dresses to take impressive photos. If you want to explore the northwestern plateau, long hiking pants are more practical: they can not only protect against mosquitoes but also keep you warm.

Accessories:
It’s essential to pack an umbrella or a raincoat due to frequent showers.
Sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat can protect you from strong UV rays.

Travel Recommendations and Tips

1. As Sichuan’s climate in June becomes warmer, snowmelt water increases even more, leading to a more spectacular waterfall view in the mountain area. Thus, don’t forget to stop at Nuorilang Waterfall in Jiuzhaigou. Besides, due to considerable rainfall, June is one of the best times to visit Dujiangyan Irrigation System, where the river surges with waves, in beautiful blue-green color.
2. June happens to be the month before summer vacation in China, so it can be considered the shoulder season for travel. You can enjoy a relatively quiet and budget-friendly trip from early June to mid-June. But still, it’s best to avoid visiting here on weekends.
3. To avoid the heat during midday, it’s best to arrange your outdoor activities in the early morning. For instance, visiting the Chengdu Giant Panda Base at 7:30, when foot traffic is at its lowest and pandas are most active.
