Best Time to Visit Sichuan

The best time to visit Sichuan is typically in spring and autumn. However, due to varying climatic conditions across different regions of Sichuan, the specific times may differ. 
 

During these periods, this region enjoys a pleasant climate: temperatures are mild, rainfall is slight, and the air feels comfortable. Therefore, it’s perfect for various sightseeing activities.  
 

Also, spring in Eastern Sichuan is lively and colorful. For example, Thatched Cottage of Du Fu witnesses the peach blossoms; Mount Qingcheng is full of vibrant greenery. Besides, pandas are more active in spring, good news for panda lovers. Last but not least, crowds and costs are not at the high level. 
 

Autumn showcases the unique beauty of Eastern Sichuan’s fall foliage view. For example, Mount Emei offers breathtaking golden-leaf scenery. 
 

Northwestern Sichuan is known for its stunning natural scenery, which is significantly influenced by weather conditions. Therefore, the best months to visit this area are in spring, from April to June, and in autumn, from September to early November. During these months, the weather is mild and relatively dry. You don’t have to worry about cold temperatures or heavy rainfall, which is perfect for outdoor explorations. 
 

Moreover, in spring, you’ll enjoy a spring scene bursting with vitality: the stream murmurs softly through mountains, tender green leaves and colorful blossoms intertwine with each other and the crystal-clear lake shimmers with blue-green. Plus, spring is the shoulder season, so tourists and travel costs are somewhat lower. 
 

Autumn is the most beautiful time of the year on the Northwestern Plateau, including everything from colorful fall foliage views, snowy mountains, and clear lakes to powerful waterfalls. But it’s also busy season here and you can imagine how crowded it gets these months. 
 

During these months, there are abundant sunshine hours, warm temperatures and hardly any rainfall. You can enjoy various blossoms alongside the streets, such as red flamboyant, purple jacaranda and pink silk floss tree. Plus, these months offer a variety of fruits, and thanks to the abundant sunlight here, the fruits are very delicious. 
 

It’s worth noting that November to February are usually the coldest times in most places in China, but you won’t feel any coldness here, perfect for people who are sensitive to cold weather to spend a warm winter.

Travelers are advised to avoid visiting Sichuan in July and August, and during popular public holidays in China. 
 

On the one hand, July and August coincide with the summer holiday in China. There will be numerous family tours and study tours, especially in Chengdu, which boasts lots of tourism resources, including Sanxingdui Museum, Chengdu Giant Panda Base, and Thatched Cottage of Du Fu. Therefore, you are likely to experience crowded attractions, extremely expensive travel costs, and find it incredibly difficult to book tickets for hot scenic spots. Similar situations occur during other holidays. 
 

On the other hand, July and August mark the rainy season in most places of Sichuan, including Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou. Particularly in the Northwestern Plateau, heavy downpours often lead to flooding and mudslides, posing dangers to travelers on the road. Plus, the temperatures are stiflingly hot and oppressive during mid-day in Eastern Sichuan in July and August, making it unsuitable for outdoor activities for a long time. 

If you are only available during this period, try to avoid weekends and make plans at least one week in advance.
