Temperature
Located at an altitude of at least 2,000 meters (6,500 feet), northwestern Sichuan experiences a relatively cooler climate in July, with highs of 29-31°C (84-88°F) and lows of 17-20°C (63-68°F) in Jiuzhaigou, which makes it a summer retreat. On a sunny day, when the sunlight throws on you, it’s totally ok to wear a t-shirt during your hiking journey; but early mornings and late evenings require a windbreaker. On rainy days, even during mid-day, the temperature may only stay at around 15°C (59°F), when a windbreaker is also necessary.
The weather of Southwestern Sichuan in July is surprisingly cool. Panzhihua undergoes the highest temperature of 26 °C (79°F) and the lowest temperature of 19°C (66°F), making it a lovely place to escape summer heat.

July marks the peak time of rainy season in Sichuan, bringing abundant rainfall and a lot of heavy downpours. In some mountain areas, disasters such as flash floods and landslides are prone to occur.
Chengdu in July receives the richest rainfall throughout the year, characterized by frequent short bursts of rain and occasional thunderstorms. But you don’t have to worry about your eagerly anticipated travel plans being ruined, as most of rain falls at night. Even if it rains during the daytime, it very likely won’t last long.
In Jiuzhaigou, rain tends to fall in the afternoons and evenings. Showers can appear suddenly and are sometimes followed by mist and drifting clouds. After the rain, the scenery becomes fresher and even more breathtaking, making your trip more rewarding.
Southwestern Sichuan in July accepts the most precipitation throughout the entire Sichuan. Short-duration severe convective weather is likely to occur in the afternoon. Thunderstorms are most frequent around 18:00 to 20:00.

Humidity levels in July remain high across the province, contributing to muggy and damp weather in Sichuan Basin, especially in Chengdu. During midday, humid and hot climate often makes you feel like in a sauna room.
In higher-altitude areas like Jiuzhaigou, although humidity levels are not that low, the slightly cooler temperatures and lush vegetation make you not feel stiflingly hot.

Sichuan in July experiences a relatively long daylight hours, about 13.5-14 hours, which allows you to have a trip with no rush.
However, you need to be aware of the strong UV rays. The maximum UV index in Chengdu can reach as high as 11, let alone the high altitude areas, making sun protection essential. Alternatively, you can try some indoor activities around noon with the strongest sun, including visiting Sanxingdui Museum and watching Sichuan Opera.

Travel Advice and Tips
1. July’s abundant rainfall brings spectacular waterfalls and vibrant natural colors to Jiuzhaigou. Don’t miss Pearl Shoal Waterfall: the rushing torrents create pearl-like droplets, which is especially photogenic after rain. Nuorilang Waterfall, one of China’s widest waterfalls, 320 m (350 yd), flows at its peak volume this month, forming dramatic cascades. Even on cloudy or rainy days, Jiuzhaigou’s lakes appear dazzlingly turquoise and emerald green. After a shower, double rainbows often show up above Rhinoceros Lake, offering unforgettable views.
2. Check weather forecasts in advance. If heavy rain is predicted, avoid visiting Jiuzhaigou or other mountainous scenic areas. Landslides or road closures can occasionally occur.
3. Falling within summer holiday in China, July is the peak travel season, meaning you will endure overcrowding attractions and expensive travel costs. Even though you get up early, lining up is possible, especially in popular spots, like the Chengdu Giant Panda Base. Therefore, it’s best to avoid this month, or travel here in early July when the crowd hasn’t reached its peak.
4. If you are available only in July, it’s best to book accommodations and tickets early to ensure a smooth trip.
5. If you are a panda lover, it’s a good idea to visit the Giant Panda Base on an overcast morning, when the temperature is a bit lower and pandas are more active.
6. Sanxingdui Museum will prolong its operating hours from 8:30-18:00 to 8:30-20:00 in Summer Holiday including July, but early booking is still required.
