1. In May, Sichuan’s weather is quite pleasant, with warm temperatures and slightly increased rainfall. But northwestern Sichuan is cooler than other areas, due to its high altitude.

Temperature 

Eastern Sichuan: Chengdu, Leshan…

Eastern Sichuan, aka Chengdu Plain, as a mild climate, with a limited day-night temperature difference of about 5-8 degrees Celsius (41-46 degrees Fahrenheit). During the daytime, even though there are not many sunny days this month, you would still feel quite warm. Take Chengdu as an example, its daily highs range from 26 to 32°C (79-90°F); in the early mornings and late afternoons, the lowest temperature usually remains around 18-20°C (64-68°F). 
 

Northwestern Sichuan: Jiuzhaigou, Daocheng…

The weather in Northwestern Sichuan in May shows the traces of spring. As temperatures gradually rise, ice and snow melt rapidly, meaning the arrival of high-water season of lakes. But you cannot ignore the significant temperature gap. In Jiuzhaigou, during mid-day, especially when the sun reaches its peak, the highest temperature can soar up to 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). However, as the night falls, the lowest temperature may drop to around 10°C (50°F)
 

Southwestern Sichuan: Panzhihua, Xichang…

You feel like in early summer in southwestern Sichuan in May, with the highest temperature often reaching 29°C (84°F). But as long as you try to avoid going out during the hottest time of the day, you can still have an enjoyable travel experience.

May brings significant rainfall to Sichuan, particularly in southwestern regions like Panzhihua, marking the onset of the rainy season. 

Eastern Sichuan’ climate is slightly rainy this month. Take the example of Chengdu: the average precipitation is about 79 mm from 15 days; yet this won't disrupt your outdoor plans. Precipitation this month is featured in primarily light rain, followed by occasional thunderstorms. In addition, it is unevenly distributed: daily precipitation can range from under 2 mm to as much as 20 mm. Therefore, we highly recommend that you check the forecast in advance and schedule indoor activities like visiting the Sanxingdui Museum on heavily rainy days. Alternatively, carrying a raincoat adds flexibility and comfort for outdoor activities on lightly rainy days, such as watching pandas at the Chengdu Giant Panda Base.

Northwestern Sichuan in May also receives moderate rainfall. But you don’t have to worry about it affecting your enjoyment too much because it is usually light showers. After the rain in Jiuzhaigou, the air here is refreshingly crisp, and the scenery appears even more vibrant. Just slip on a waterproof jacket, and the misty atmosphere of the post-rain landscape won't disappoint you.

May is one of the least humid months in eastern Sichuan, with an average humidity of around 70%. It finally shakes off the damp chill of winter and has not yet reached the sweltering hot summer, making it one of the most comfortable times of the year for travel.

Northwestern Sichuan experiences a moderate humidity level, perfect for outdoor activities. 

In Southwestern Sichuan, the air remains dry and pleasant, ideal for outdoor excursions and flower viewing.

Daytime hours in Sichuan extend steadily throughout May, with up to 14 hours of daylight. This gives travelers ample time to explore the bustling streets, relatively peaceful cultural attractions and vibrant natural landscape. For instance, in Chengdu, you can spend a day wandering through Jinli Street or Chunxi Road, or immersing yourself in the long history at Du Fu Thatched Cottage and the Sanxingdui Museum at leisure. Even if you head to surrounding places like Mount Qingcheng or Dujiangyan, there’s no need rush thanks to the late sunset.

With an average of 10 hours of sunshine per day, the landscapes look even more charming and it’s easier to take beautiful photos. However, UV radiation is quite strong this month, so sun protection is essential.
 

What to Wear in Sichuan in May 2026

Upper Clothing: A short-sleeved shirt paired with a light jacket is perfect for urban areas in eastern and southwestern Sichuan. For nearby mountains, opt for long sleeves, while a windproof shell jacket is a must if you’re traveling to the northwestern plateau regions. 
 
Bottom Clothing: Light jeans or shorts work well. Female travelers can also wear long dresses for a stylish yet comfortable outfit. For tours in northwestern Sichuan, hiking pants are more practical. 

Footwear:
A pair of comfortable sneakers is always a safe choice, especially for long walks or hikes.

Accessories:
Frequent light showers mean that rain gear is necessary: a raincoat is more practical than an umbrella for mountain treks.
Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from strong UV rays.
 

Travel Recommendations & Tips

1. With the warming climate, Jiuzhaigou has abundant snowmelt water in May. So it is highly recommended to visit Nuorilang Waterfall, which flows at full strength this month. In the afternoon, you may even catch a rainbow arching across the mist. In addition, lakes like Five-Flower Lake display stunning scenery on sunny days, reflecting the sunlight in layers of green and blue hues, which is one of Sichuan’s most photogenic scenes. 
2. Early May marks China’s May Day holiday, one of the longest holidays in China. Expect crowds in popular scenic spots, hard-to-get train tickets, and a sharp rise in hotel prices. It’s wise to book at least one month in advance or visit outside this peak period. 
3. Starting in May, Jiuzhaigou enters its peak season. The park opens longer from 8:00 to 20:00, but note that last entry is at 14:00, so plan your visit accordingly.
