Ulaanbaatar – Beijing Trains

A pair of trains, resuming operation since June 3, 2025, are running on the route between Ulaanbaatar and Beijing at present. They are train 024/ K24 from Ulaanbaatar to Beijing, and 023/ K23 for the return trip. This route is one of the most popular routes on the whole Trans-Siberia railway network.

Running distance: 1,553 kilometers (695 miles)

Duration: about 31 hours 

Stations along the way: Ulaanbaatar (Ulan Bator), Choir, Saynshand, Zamyn-Uud, Erlian, Jining South and Beijing. Zamyn-Uud and Erlian are two border cities.

The K23/ K24 train, known as the 023/ 024 train in Mongolia, is an international intermodal express train jointly operated by China Railway Corporation and Mongolia railway Company. The whole journey is from Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China, to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. This route was firstly operated on July 2, 1985, and is the first international intermodal train between China and Mongolia. The trains on this route span four provinces and cities including East Gobi province, Gobi Sumubel province, Central province and Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia, while they also span four cities and provinces in China, including Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. To meet the different wheel gauge of two countries, the train stop at Erlian for about 3 hours to change wheels. 
 

This pair of trains are available once a week, operated by China Railways and Mongolia Railways in rotation. Train K23 leaves Beijing on every Tuesday, and train K24 leaves Ulaanbaatar on every Thursday. The departure date for this pair of trains change in different seasons. Sometimes according to the reservation, one more train in summer and one less train in off seasons.
