Guangzhou Weather in August

 Season: Summer
Guangzhou’s weather in August is characterized by high temperatures and humid air. Even worse, as August is the local rainy season and impacted by frequent typhoon activities, the weather feels unbearably oppressive. What’s more, August is China’s summer holiday, so there are numerous tourists and soaring travel costs. All these make August a bad time to visit Guangzhou.

Oppressively Hot

Most people can’t stand the climate of Guangzhou in August, especially during midday hours when high temperature ranges from 28 to 36 degrees Celsius (82-97 degrees Fahrenheit). What’s more, the city experiences an extremely humid environment, averaging 82% in August. This can intensify the perceived temperature, making you feel like over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Even though you hold a portable fan, the air it blows still feels oppressively hot. Therefore, you may just want to stay indoors with strong air-conditioning, like shopping malls or museums.

Don’t expect downpours to save your life, as the weather feels much more oppressive after rain due to soaring humidity. Even after sunset, you may not feel much cooler, with nighttime lows of 24-27°C (75-81°F).

Rainy and Typhoon Season

In August, Guangzhou experiences frequent severe convective weather in the afternoons, leading to a large amount of rainfall. The average precipitation reaches 227 mm over 17 rainy days.

The bright side is that the rain usually comes in bursts and each won’t last for too long. In addition, this month’s rain is also relatively concentrated. It’s important to note that it doesn’t rain throughout the entire month; instead, there are typically short, intense downpours in two or three days in a row. Therefore, for those planning outings, as long as weather alerts do not indicate heavy rain, their plans won’t be significantly affected.

August is also a month with active typhoons, bringing severe rains, strong winds, high temperatures, and even thunderstorms and hail in the afternoon. According to the history data, there are about 1-2 typhoons influencing the city. Expect disasters such as urban flooding and landslides and it is recommended to avoid going out during extreme weather conditions.

Sunshine Hours and Daylight Hours

Sunrise Time: 5:57-6:08
Sunset Time: 18:45-19:09
Daylight Hours: 12H37M-13H11M

Despite a large amount of precipitation in August, Guangzhou still enjoys relatively longer sunshine hours, about 7 hours per day. Sun protection is a big issue, as the peak UV index can reach 11 or even higher.

As mentioned before, even after sunset, it doesn’t necessarily cool down. If you want to watch the sunset while catching landmarks like the Canton Tower or Pearl River, you might find it hard to endure the heat and intense sunshine. It’s a good idea to head to a restaurant or bar with an unobstructed view of the Pearl River and the Canton Tower, so that you can enjoy a delicious meal while taking in the sunset without being bothered by the overwhelming heat outside.

What to Wear for Guangzhou Trip in August 2027

Guangzhou Clothes in August
Upper clothing: To handle the muggy feeling when traveling, visitors are advised to wear breathable T-shirts made of quick-dry fabric. A waterproof and sun-protective jacket is very practical for dealing with showers and sunburn.

Bottom clothing: It’s OK to choose shorts or skirts. Light summer pants are also advisable to protect from mosquito stings.

Footwear: Frequent rainy days can make the road slippery, so it’s essential to choose non-slip shoes. Breathable sneakers and comfortable sandals are recommended.

 Accessories:
1. It’s highly necessary to take a raincoat or an umbrella with you.
2. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat.
3. Humid and hot environments are prone to breeding insects, so it’s best to pack insect repellent.

Travel Recommendations and Tips

1. Most schools are out in August due to the summer holiday, so it’s inevitable to experience crowded attractions and skyrocketing prices of hotel rooms and flight tickets across China. Not to mention that Guangzhou is a popular travel spot. Combined with the hot and rainy climate, Guangzhou is not a good place to visit in August.
2. Despite that, it doesn’t mean you cannot have fun here in August. Firstly, it’s always a good idea to start your day early, so that you can avoid main crowds and the temperature also is a bit lower. Secondly, we recommend staying indoors during 11:00-16:00 when the heat peaks. Guangzhou boasts lots of indoor attractions including Guangzhou Museum, the Museum of Nan Yue King’s Mausoleum, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and Bruce Lee's Ancestral Home. Thirdly, Guangzhou is famous for its stunning night views. Whether you choose to take a cruise on the Pearl River to admire the shining Canton Tower or visit the illuminating Great Buddha Temple on Beijing Pedestrian Street, you are sure to have a great time.
3. Chimelong Safari Park is worth a day, as long as the weather prediction says there won’t be continuous heavy downpours. Brief showers can make the temperature cooler a bit, and the animals become more active. Plus, there are many indoor exhibits, such as Koala House and Panda Park, so there’s no need to worry about getting bored when it’s raining.
