Guangzhou Weather in September

 Season: Summer
Guangzhou’s weather in September is still a bit hot, especially in the early and middle month, due to the Indian Summer phenomenon. The high humidity makes it more difficult to endure. The heat by late September eases a little. September marks the end of the rainy season, and is occasionally influenced by typhoons. This month can be considered a shoulder travel season, but remember to avoid the Mid-autumn Festival Holiday.

Hot around Noon, A Bit Cool at Night

Overall, Guangzhou’s temperatures in September slowly drop, but early September still feels like summer, with daytime highs of 30-34 degrees Celsius (86-93degrees Fahrenheit). Noticeably, it’s not rare to experience “Indian Summer” from early to mid-September, with several days in a row of highest temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). Plus, due to the damp air, the weather feels much hotter in reality. By the end of the month, the weather isn’t exactly cool, but it’s not as stifling as the peak of summer, with daytime highs ranging from 27 to 33 degrees Celsius (81-91 degrees Fahrenheit).

In the early morning and late night, the temperature hovers between 23 and 26°C (73-79°F), which is more suitable for outdoor explorations.

The End of Rainy Season

September sees decreasing precipitation, showing the end of the rainy season. The average monthly precipitation is 166 mm from 13 rainy days. In September, Guangzhou is still possible to be struck by typhoons, which bring intense downpours or thunderstorms and strong winds. Even though a typhoon doesn’t land directly, it’s outer circulation can still trigger heavy rainfall and strong winds in Guangzhou. In this case, natural disasters may occur, such as urban flooding and landslides. At this time, all people should stay in rooms.

Humid Air

Guangzhou experiences a very humid climate in September, with an average humidity level of 78%. After rain, the figure can even reach over 85%. It makes people feel not only hotter, but also stifling and muggy. If you walk outside for over 20 minutes during midday hours, your clothes would cling tightly to your body, and your hair would probably fall flat, which can definitely impact your travel experience, especially if you want to snap impressive photos.

Sunshine Hours and Daylight Hours

Sunrise Time: 6:09-6:18
Sunset Time: 18:15-18:45
Daylight Hours: 11H57M-12H35M

In September, Guangzhou enjoys considerable sunshine hours, about 6 hours per day. The peak UV index can reach 11. Even though it’s an overcast day, sun protection is still necessary, as clouds can’t cover all ultraviolet rays.

If you intend to catch a stunning sunset, it’s best to arrive at the spot 30 minutes earlier before sunset so that you can watch the sky gradually change color. The best places to watch the sunset must be the Canton Tower, but this spot is packed with tourists and you might find it difficult to secure a nice spot. Across from the Canton Tower, Haixinsha is an excellent spot with fewer tourists to watch both the tower and an amazing sunset view.

What to Wear in Guangzhou in September 2026

Guangzhou Clothes in September
Upper clothing: September’s outfit should mainly be summer clothes, so visitors are advised to choose breathable T-shirts, and it’s best to opt for quick-dry fabrics due to the damply hot weather. It’s also necessary to pack a light jacket to protect from intense sunshine outdoors and cool moments in air-conditioned spaces.

Bottom clothing: Light summer pants are suitable for most travel activities and weather conditions. It’s ok to wear shorts, skirts, or dresses.

Footwear: You can’t go wrong with a pair of breathable sneakers. Alternatively, non-slip sandals are recommended.

 Accessories:

Travel Recommendations and Tips

1. September is a relatively quiet month, as most schools start their new terms and tourists significantly decrease, so it’s easier to book cost-effective hotel rooms. However, it’s worth noting that the Mid-autumn Festival holiday falling on September 15th, 2026, is a minor travel peak for Chinese people. It’s best to avoid this period for a better travel experience.
2. To avoid peak summer heat, visitors are advised to arrive at outdoor attractions as early as possible. They can visit Chen Clan Academy and admire the beauty of Lingnan-style architecture, or take a photo with the Five-Ram Sculpture in Yuexiu Park. In the early morning, they can also take perfect photos without the interruption of tourists.
3. Between 11:00 and 16:00, it’s best to choose some indoor attractions with air-conditioning. Museums like Guangzhou Museum or the Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum of the Nanyue King, and Cantonese Opera are highly recommended. Alternatively, Guangzhou has many modern shopping malls, where tourists can spoil themselves without having to endure heat.
4. At night in September, Guangzhou’s climate is a bit more comfortable, and the city becomes vibrant and lively. Visitors can take a cruise ship over the Pearl River while admiring the shining night view, or follow this route to have a night tour: the Canton Tower, Haixin Bridge, Haixinsha, Huachenghui, and Liede Bridge.
