Rose Mo on the Li River, Guilin

I am so glad to be able to introduce myself to you. My Chinese name is Mo Chunhong and my English name is Rose. I was born in 1980 in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and my hometown is in a small but beautiful village 18 kilometers from Yangshuo town. I studied Tourism English for two years from 1997 to 1999 at Yangshuo Foreign Language School. During my third year I worked as a trainee in a three-star hotel in Guilin and also in the hotel’s western restaurant. Throughout this year I gained lots of experience meeting foreign tourists.

In 2000 my hometown of Yangshuo became a very popular tourist city. The famous Li River traverses the county and brings it the most beautiful scenery. Taking a cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo along the Li River is a wonderful experience for visitors. More and more foreigners come here every year. I took a part-time job as an English tour guide at that time and I gained much experience. During the next two years I worked in another hotel that served foreigners and it was very good for my oral English improvement. My duties whilst working at the hotel included: working at the reception, house-keeping, serving in the restaurant, and working in the sales department.

In 2002, I went back to study for two more years in Guangxi Normal University and my majors were economic and trade English. Throughout this time my English greatly improved.

Because of the beautiful landscape that Guilin has to offer, I decided to become a local tour guide. I got my guide's license in 2005. I like being a tour guide as it's a very interesting job although it might be a tough one sometimes. All groups want to enjoy the area but every group is different in that they have different interests. For example, some guests are interested in farming, so I show them more about the countryside, farming and village life. I show them rice growing in the paddy fields; both my parents are farmers and I used to help them when I was a child. Some people are more adventurous so I take them kayaking, bamboo rafting, and rock climbing. Other people like to take lots of photos, so I take these people to the scenic areas of Guilin and Yangshuo. Some tourists are interested in history so I take them to the old towns. In previous years I was also the guide for lots of biking groups. I would take these groups along the beautiful countryside roads. I am always concerned with visitors' interests and pay attention to their needs while also carrying out the written itinerary provided by my office.

I am coming to Guilin in Nov - Dec 2019 to study Mandarin. While I am in Guilin
I am interested in seeing cormorant fishing (鸬鹚钓鱼). Do you have any knowledge as to whether this traditional activity still exists in Guilin and to what extent?
