Bike tour in Beijing
Let's start the tour from the Temple of Earth (Ditan Park) in eastern Beijing, which is the imperial altar for the emperors to worship the god of earth in the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1911) dynasties. All the buildings here were designed and constructed in accordance with ancient Chinese ideas of 'the sky is round and the earth is squar' and 'the sky is azure while the earth is yellow', as well as the traditional images of universe, dragons and phoenixes. Apart from the old buildings, 72% of the park is covered by grasslands, cypresses, and more than 100 species of plants, among which 168 trees are over 100 years old. We suggest you pay a visit to the park before renting a bike, and 40 to 60 minutes is enough to make the most of this spot.

When leaving the park from its south gate, walk southward for about 250 meters, you will find the Exit B of Yonghegong subway station on your left side, where you can rent a bike.
Ride southward along Yonghegong Street. On your right-hand side are the Confucian Temple and the Imperial College, while the Lama Temple is on your left-hand side. If you are interested in Tibetan Buddhism, you can pay a visit to the Lama Temple; Confucius Temple is a good choice for those who are interested in Confucianism, while Imperial College will gives you general information about Chinese education in ancient times.
Then travel south along Yonghegong Street for about 700 meters, turn left into Shique Hutong after crossing the large intersection at Beixin Bridge subway station. The famous Nine Bends Hutong ('jiu dao wan hu tong') is about 180 meters ahead at the second turning. It is so named because there are a lot of turns and bends along the alley. You can ride south along the hutong for about 180 meters and turn left onto Nine Bends South Alley ('jiu dao wan nan xiang'). Head eastward for 100 meters, you will reach Xintaicang Hutong. Turn left and ride straight northward along the hutong for about 240 meters, you will then exit this twisting hutong region. Be sure to follow the signposts, or you will definitely get lost. The fun of the hutong tour comes from not just weaving along the narrow alleys, but also from the special cultural experience of traditional courtyards, lots of pretty brick sculptures and stone drums.
After exiting the Xintaicang hutong, you will reach Gui Street, which is a famous food street in Beijing. There are many good and cheap hash houses, most of which are open 24 hours. All of the restaurants are adorned with red decorations and lanterns. Every night, when the red lanterns are on, most of the restaurants are filled with diners and curious foreign visitors. You can also sample the specialty here - spicy and hot lobsters.
Beijing Hutong
Cycle east along the Dongzhimen Nei Avenue, pass the Dongzhimen Gate, and then ride on to the Dongzhimen Wai Avenue for about 1 km, you will arrive at Sanlitun, the most popular bar street in the metropolis. In fact, the fashionable bars are located at the south of Dongzhimen Wai Avenue, while on the north side of the avenue are the foreign embassies. The bar street may be quiet in day-time, however, it will be totally another vibrant world at night.

Continue to ride eastward to the end of the avenue and you will find the National Agriculture Exhibition Center on the east side of Nongzhan Bridge. It is well-located and easily accessible, hence, it is now the best place to hold large scale exhibitions. To the east of the exhibition hall is the Sun Park, which is a large comprehensive amusement park with city landscaping and greenery. It plays an import role at improving the city's environment and enriching the cultural life of the local population. You can get to the park by riding eastward along the road north of the exhibition center.
Here ends your Beijing eastern city area cycling. Along the way, almost all the roads are in pleasant shade, so you don't need to worry about the strong sunshine. It is a short but definitely an enjoyable cycle route. To return the bike, you can ride back to Yonghegong or return it at the south gate of the Sun Park.
