Ten Miles Gallery

Ten Miles Gallery, located at the foot of Tianzi Mountain in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, is a wide canyon stretching 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles) in length, with distinctive peaks, rocks, dense forests, and fragrant flowers on both sides. A narrow walkway winds in the valley, parallel to a sightseeing train track. As the name implies, walking on the path or moving in the train cabin feels like strolling in a natural painting.

Facts to know about Ten Miles Gallery

Tourists do not actually need to walk 10 miles.

The footpath is 1.7 km (1.1 mi) long, and the rest of the valley is not open to visit yet. A flat path without steps poses no challenge to visitors, including seniors and children. Besides, the animal-themed sightseeing train attracts children a lot, making it a good destination for family visitors.

An alternative in rainy weather

Unlike mountaintop sightseeing areas that require high visibility, Ten Miles Gallery is not affected too much by the weather; it even gets more charming on rainy days with looming stone peaks and fresh air. What’s more, few visitors coming in general offers you a chance to admire the landscape in quiet.

In fact, most tourists consider Ten Miles Gallery a supplementary rather than a major destination during the journey to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. They don’t specially reserve time for this area, but visit when they have time and energy left.

What to see in Ten Miles Gallery

Three Sister Peaks

They are the highlight of Ten Miles Gallery, located at the inner end. Three connected stone peaks of different heights stand side by side, shaped like three girls whispering to each other. The left “eldest sister” carries a child on her back, the “younger” one in the middle holds her baby in her arms, and the “youngest”, whose belly is slightly bulging, seems to be pregnant.

Herb-Picking Man Peak

It is an independent 100-meter-high (330 feet) peak. Looking from a distance, the rock resembles an elderly man standing sideways with his back hunched. The “man” wearing a square scarf and a long shirt carries a basket full of herbs. He stares at the mountain peak in front of him, as if he discovers a precious medicinal herb. On the rock of the “basket”, there is a tree diagonally inserted, which looks like a hoe from afar. When there is a thin mist in the morning, he seems to be walking in the clouds.

Legend has it that there was a kind doctor who traveled mountains and valleys all year round to collect herbs to treat the local poor patients for free. After his death, he transformed into a stone peak and guards this mountain all the time.

It is composed of three closely connected rocks: two tall rocks nestle tightly together, with a small one in the middle, just like a loving couple carefully holding their kid. This cozy picture always attracts family tourists to take photos together.

Prince Xiang Reading Book Peak

At the beginning of Ten Miles Gallery, there is a huge stone peak resembling a seated man, who is holding a book in both hands. Local people said that’s Prince Xiang, a leader who led an uprising at the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). After the defeat, he secluded himself in the mountains and read books every day. Finally, Prince Xiang turned into a stone peak. It’s one of the shooting locations of the film Avatar.

3 travelling ways: Sightseeing train, Walking, or Both

Visitors need to conduct a go-and-return journey along Ten Miles Gallery, as the inner end leads to no scenic area but only serves as the beginning of the uphill path to Tianzi Mountain.

Sightseeing train

Taking the train can help you save energy, as the road from the entrance to the end is uphill. The transparent roof of the carriage ensures visitors good visibility. There is also a bilingual video in Chinese and Korean that briefly introduces the mountain peaks beside the track during the 10-minute trip.

The disadvantages lie in that you cannot get off the train to take a photo steadily whenever you want, as it doesn’t stop midway. Besides, the transparent roof makes tourists feel hot inside in summer without any shields.

Tip: It would be better to sit on the left when you enter the scenic area and right when you get out because all spots are scattered on the one side of the track.

Walking

It takes about 40 minutes for a one-way trip and 1.5 hours in total for a round one. You can appreciate the various shapes of sandstone formations and stop at any time to take photos, while listening to bird calls, stream sounds, and wind blowing on leaves. It’s also exciting to wave to other tourists on the sightseeing train passing by.

Tips:
1. Strollers can walk easily, but it’s a little challenging for wheelchairs, as the narrow path only allows two people to pass side by side.
2. Although it’s built in the valley, the path without trees on any sides doesn’t enjoy shadows, so sun protection measures are needed in sunny weather.
3. No rest area or food supply is available in the middle.

Sightseeing train + Walking

It is the ideal choice for visiting Ten Miles Gallery, which maximizes travel efficiency; sightseeing train in and walk out is more advisable, because hiking downhill is less tiring.

Travel tip for visiting Ten Miles Gallery

You may meet cute but aggressive monkeys along the path and at Monkey Garden located at the inner end. Do not get close to them, and do not carry any food or drinks in your hand or expose any plastic bag to avoid being scratched. If they rush towards you, throw something to attract their attention and then leave quickly.
