In the past Zhangjiajie has been renowned as the bright pearl of northwestern Hunan Province. However, development in this area has lagged behind because of poor communication. Nowadays with the support of the central government, the city has undergone great improvements through the construction of new infrastructure including highways, railways and an airport.
Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport is around 4 miles (6 kilometers) from downtown area and 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Wulingyuan Scenic Area. It plays an important role in receiving tourists who visit the renowned Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Phoenix Ancient Town. The airport operates flights to many domestic cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Yinchuan, Hengyang, Xian and Nanjing, and a couple of international cities like Busan and Taipei.
Shuttle buses are accessible here, taking passengers to the city center for free within 20 minutes. Besides, city bus no. 4 is available nearby, by which passengers can go to local Central Bus Station to transfer to the direct long-distance buses to the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Wulingyuan and Tianzi Mountain.
There are two railway stations in the city. One is small located in Cili County which is used for local traffic. The other is the main Zhangjiajie Railway Station located in Yongding District, 12 kilometers (about 7 miles) from the city center. More than ten big and middle-sized cities in China such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Changsha can be reached by train. Bus No.1, 2, 6 and 7 connect the Main Railway Station and the city center. The fare is usually about CNY1.
