Zhangjiajie Transportation

In the past Zhangjiajie has been renowned as the bright pearl of northwestern Hunan Province. However, development in this area has lagged behind because of poor communication. Nowadays with the support of the central government, the city has undergone great improvements through the construction of new infrastructure including highways, railways and an airport.

Air

Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport is around 4 miles (6 kilometers) from downtown area and 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Wulingyuan Scenic Area. It plays an important role in receiving tourists who visit the renowned Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Phoenix Ancient Town. The airport operates flights to many domestic cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Yinchuan, Hengyang, Xi'an and Nanjing, and a couple of international cities like Busan and Taipei.

Shuttle buses are accessible here, taking passengers to the city center for free within 20 minutes. Besides, city bus no. 4 is available nearby, by which passengers can go to local Central Bus Station to transfer to the direct long-distance buses to the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Wulingyuan and Tianzi Mountain.

Train

There are two railway stations in the city. One is small located in Cili County which is used for local traffic. The other is the main Zhangjiajie Railway Station located in Yongding District, 12 kilometers (about 7 miles) from the city center. More than ten big and middle-sized cities in China such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Changsha can be reached by train. Bus No.1, 2, 6 and 7 connect the Main Railway Station and the city center. The fare is usually about CNY1.

Taxi

Traveling around the city by taxi is inexpensive. The flag-fall price is only CNY5 for the first 1mi (1.6km), and every additional kilometer costs CNY1.6. If the trip is farther than 6mi (10km), the unit price for each extra kilometer is CNY3.2. As the city is small, it costs no more than CNY20 to commute within the town.

Taxis can be easily flag down, but most drivers won’t charge by the meter. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to negotiate a flat rate before getting on the car. To National Forest Park or Wulingyuan Scenic Area, the reference cab fare is CNY100, departing from the downtown or Hehua Airport.

Generally, you need to arrive at the airport 2 hours in advance, so I guess you’d better take a taxi. As for the departure time, it depends on the distance between your hotel and the airport.

First, you can take the bus line 1 or tourism bus to Wulinyuan Bus Station, and then take the shuttle bus to ZJJ Central Bus Station. I don’t know the earliest time when the bus leave, however, the latest time is about 18:00. Anyway, the interval time is about 20 minutes.

If you want to go to the airport, first you need to get to ZJJ Central Bus Station. And then walk east about 1km to take the bus line 401 to the airport. Or you can choose a taxi, the fare may be around CNY 100
