Shigatse Railway Station

Shigatse Railway Station is the ending point of Lhasa- Shigatse Railway, mainly operating trains to/from Lhasa. It is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Tashilhunpo Monastery and about 150 kilometers (93 miles) to Sakya Monastery. It is also the nearest railway station to the base of Mt. Everest, the distance between which is about 360 kilometers (220 miles).

Schedule

Shigatse Railway Station mainly operates trains from/to Lhasa, Shannan, Linzhi, and passengers need to transfer trains at Lhasa Railway Station if they need to go to other cities such as Beijing, Xi’an, Xining, Lanzhou, Luoyang, Golmud, Nakchu, etc.

According to long-term plan, the China – Nepal Railway between Lhasa and Katmandu will have a stop in Shigatse. By then, passengers can also take trains from Shigatse to Nepal.

How to get to Shigatse Train Station from downtown area:

Passengers can take No.4, 7, 8 to Shigatse Railway Station.
 

How to get to Tashilhunpo Monastery:

Passengers can take bus No. 8 to Zhashi Square bus stop which is in front of the Tashilhunpo Monastery.
 

How to get to Sakya Monastery:

STEP 1: Travel from Shigatse Railway Station to Shigatse General Bus Station.

There are two options:
1.    Take bus No.7 and get off at Tonghe Hospital bus stop, then walk northward and turn right at the first crossroad then turn left at the second crossroad to reach the Shigatse General Bus Station. The distance is about 1,200 meters (1,300 yards).
2.    Take a taxi and it costs about CNY25 within 15 minutes.
 

STEP 2: Shigatse General Bus Station to Sakya Monastery

Passengers can take a coach to Sakya Monastery directly at cost of CNY45 for each person, but the coach departs every other day.

Actually, overseas tourists are not allowed to travel solo in Tibet, including in Shigatse. So you need to join a tour organized by authorized travel agencies. If so, the travel agency will solve the transportation issue for you.
 

How to get to Mt. Everest from Shigatse Railway Station:

Most travelers join tour groups and follow their travel guides to get to Mt. Everest from Shigatse. A single ride needs at least 8 hours. The price varies a lot depending on different types of car and service standards. If you need this service, you can contact TravelChinaGuide for inquiry.
