Overall I was very impressed with the booking procedures on TravelChinaGuide. There was an issue with one of my bookings and I was contacted immediately with alternative options and prices and they made changing trains very simple. I was impressed that they provided instructions in Chinese for us to show the ticket office people, however in our experience this just seemed to confuse them. The actual act of picking up our tickets was not so straight forward but that was likely due to the language barrier rather than anything to do with our booking itself. My advice to future travellers would be to pick up your tickets from the train station as early as possible (we went a day early and it took us nearly 2hrs to get them.. so definitely wouldn't recommend getting them just prior to departure).
I travelled in 2nd class on a high speed bullet train from Xi'an to Beijing and found the seats to be quite comfortable and we had more space than I thought we would, there was good leg room to stretch out and the carriages themselves were exceptionally clean. There is nothing to do on these trains though so make sure you bring a book or simply look out the window and see the Chinese countryside.
The other train I booked was an overnight from Chengdu to Xi'an. I purchased soft sleeper tickets. I would recommend future travellers to see if there is a 'soft sleeper waiting area' at their departure station. There was at the station we departed from and it had very comfy chairs to wait in rather than benches in the actual station area. The beds on the train definitely weren't all that 'soft' but they were comfortable enough for one night. We were paired with another English speaking couple which was both nice and convenient. I would recommend future travellers requesting to be bunked with other foreigners if possible. Unfortunately there was a lot of smoking on our train, including train staff which I did not like. As an asthmatic this affected my comfort whilst on the train so I would warn future travellers about this if it would be a huge problem for them. Also the bathroom facilities on the train were quite appalling, even for public restroom standards. If you're looking to save some money when travelling long distances than overnight trains are fine for what they are.
I would definitely recommend using TravelChinaGuide for purchasing train tickets to anyone going to China.

We took an overnight train to Xi'an from Beijing and a bullet train back to Beijing for our trip in China. The overnight soft sleeper provided clean blankets and pillows; however, the bed itself was extremely hard- like laying directly on wood. We got our own private bathroom which was nice (but it did run out of toilet paper quickly- luckily we had extra), the train was relatively quiet, and we had plenty of storage space for our suitcases. The only downside other than the hard beds was the stuffiness of the train and the constant smell of cigarette smoke. And because it was a train (where you couldn't open any windows) we were stuck with stuffy cigarette air for 12 hours straight. On the bullet train on the way back we sat in first class. There was plenty of room for our suitcases in the overhead storage. People came by selling snacks and coffee. The bathrooms were kept clean and the ride was quick and comfortable. This ride was quite better due to the fact that nobody was smoking on this train. The photos are of the overnight train ride. All in all, it was a decent experience. ...More

    Hi Sunny,

Thank you for all of your help. I have to say that your service is exceptional. Being to book my train tickets online and having them delivered to my hotel was a great time-saver and a great service.

The trains were comfortable and on-time. The only thing that would have made the travel a little more comfortable was if the stewardesses made their announcements in English and Chinese. There were a few times that I wanted to buy some of the products on the train, but my Chinese is very rudimentary, so I did not take advantage.

All-in-all, the services were stellar and the excursions I booked through this service (Great Wall - Mutianyu, Forbibben City/Summer Palace, Xian terra-cotta Warriors) were amazing. The tour guides were excellent with a great command of the English language! I loved Sabrina and Lisa! 5-stars for sure!

Booked 2 train journeys on this website. Shanghai to Xi'an and Xi'an to Beijing. As the trains booking openings became available the tickets were issued. Everything was done online and the experience was very easy and efficient.

The whole process went perfectly. The tickets for two journeys were available on check in at the first hotel, and we knew what to do at each stage thanks to the helpful information on the web site. We appreciated the allocation of seats in the front row of the First Class carriages as there was ample room to place our cases in front of us. We would have no hesitation in recommending Travel China Guide.
