Running Route of Xi'an - Chengdu High Speed Train

Xi'an - Jiangyou Railway: The construction of this section has begun since 2012 and it was completed on December 6th, 2017. The duration between Jiangyou and Xi'an is shortened to 3 hours or so. The designed highest speed is 250 km/h (155 mph) and the length is 534 kilometers (332 miles).

As this section will traverse Qinling Mountain, many tunnels and bridges have been planned to avoid detours, which account for about 92.1% of the whole Xi'an-Chengdu High Speed Rail Line. On October 13, 2016, the 9-kilometer-long (5.6 miles) Fuchuan Tunnel was cut through. Since then, all tunnels along the way have been finished and the constructors have started laying tracks in a large scale.

Jiangyou - Chengdu section: This section is a part of Chengdu - Mianyang - Leshan Intercity High Speed Railway which has been put into use since December 20th, 2014 and the length is 124 kilometers (77 miles). The current running speed is up to 124 mi/h (200 km/h) and the journey time is about 1 -2 hours. In addition, you can take this rail to visit Leshan Giant Buddha and Mt. Emei from Chengdu; the duration is about 45 - 90 minutes and 1 - 1.5 hours respectively.

What to see along the way

As the train goes through central Shaanxi Plain, Qinling Mountain to Sichuan Basin, the sceneries along the way will be a feast for the eyes. When traveling, the vast plain, the fertile land, well-growing crops, well-arranged houses and those who are working in the fields will give you a chance to see the lives of local peasants. The fresh air, blue sky, white cloud, green hills and blue waters between Qinling Mountains will make you want to stop and visit for a while. But you also should get ready as Chengdu to Xi'an High Speed Train and vice versa will go through several long tunnels in Qinling Mountains. When arriving at Sichuan Basin, you will know why Chengdu is renowned as Heavenly State and the abundant natural resources and cultural and historical heritages in this city will be worth a visit and make you indulge in pleasures without stop.
Currently, there are 8.5 pairs of normal trains shuttling between the two cities with duration of 10 – 18 hours. It costs CNY332/346/400 for a soft sleeper, CNY208/225/239/244 for a hard sleeper, and CNY 98/112/128 for a hard seat.

Aside from rail travel, one can also travel by flight or by coach from Chengdu to Xi'an or vice versa. There is no need to say that flights take the shortest time, about 1.5 – 2 hours, but cost the most, CNY 600 or so for an economy class seat. The coaches cost less, about CNY 200 – 240, but taking a long time of about 9 hours; in addition, it will be tiring and boring to travel by coach for such a long journey and the ticket is not easy to get for foreign passengers. One thing you also should know is that flights and coaches are more easily affected by weather than trains.

Booking experience through TCG booking center is very good indeed. The booking process is straight forward and the customer service was excellent.

The journeys were both very enjoyable. I was happy to pay a little extra for First class seating and it made my trip more relaxing and enjoyable. The two stations that I traveled between, were both modern and well arranged, and the service seemed very acceptable. Announcements were made in both Chinese and English and the signs were intelligible even though they were in Chinese.

The paper ticket is in Chinese but I already knew my carriage and seat number from your confirmation email. So it did not take a great efforts to locate my seat. Overall, I enjoyed this experience by train.

Perfect! I purchased tickets online, uploaded passports and requested that physical ticket be sent to hotel. I was worried about each step of the process but it worked. So easy. The train experience was also perfect. Easy to work out where to queue and get on the train. We went first class but have since gone second class on another leg of the trip. Not much difference really except 3 & 2 seats in second class rather than 2 & 2. I also used this website for opening times and suggested routes through museums etc. No reason why you can’t visit China by yourself without a guide (55 year old mother,22 year old daughter). Thank you travel china guide...More

We found the booking service to be excellent and the TCG staffs be patiently with our several mistakes.
The station at Chengdu was a bit daunting with no English signs but with a picture of our booking form on the camera, staff were very helpful.
The train was fine, clean (apart from the toilets) and the station name in English version in carriage is a great help. Food was good. We over all enjoyed this trip to Xian.

My booking experience through TCG was 5/5. Great train ride, plenty of space for luggage, we got on first and had space in the back of the train car to store our 2 larger luggage, the carry-on went overhead. Nice, clean train. We travelled on the coach 2nd class ticket and it was more than comfortable with plenty of leg-room. We brought our own snacks which we purchased on the train waiting terminal. You can take the train from the city center directly to the train station, located above the metro. The booking was easy and the tickets were waiting for us in our hotel when we arrived.
