Running Route of Xi'an - Chengdu High Speed Train

Xi'an - Jiangyou Railway: The construction of this section has begun since 2012 and it was completed on December 6th, 2017. The duration between Jiangyou and Xi'an is shortened to 3 hours or so. The designed highest speed is 250 km/h (155 mph) and the length is 534 kilometers (332 miles).

As this section will traverse Qinling Mountain, many tunnels and bridges have been planned to avoid detours, which account for about 92.1% of the whole Xi'an-Chengdu High Speed Rail Line. On October 13, 2016, the 9-kilometer-long (5.6 miles) Fuchuan Tunnel was cut through. Since then, all tunnels along the way have been finished and the constructors have started laying tracks in a large scale.

Jiangyou - Chengdu section: This section is a part of Chengdu - Mianyang - Leshan Intercity High Speed Railway which has been put into use since December 20th, 2014 and the length is 124 kilometers (77 miles). The current running speed is up to 124 mi/h (200 km/h) and the journey time is about 1 -2 hours. In addition, you can take this rail to visit Leshan Giant Buddha and Mt. Emei from Chengdu; the duration is about 45 - 90 minutes and 1 - 1.5 hours respectively.

What to see along the way

As the train goes through central Shaanxi Plain, Qinling Mountain to Sichuan Basin, the sceneries along the way will be a feast for the eyes. When traveling, the vast plain, the fertile land, well-growing crops, well-arranged houses and those who are working in the fields will give you a chance to see the lives of local peasants. The fresh air, blue sky, white cloud, green hills and blue waters between Qinling Mountains will make you want to stop and visit for a while. But you also should get ready as Chengdu to Xi'an High Speed Train and vice versa will go through several long tunnels in Qinling Mountains. When arriving at Sichuan Basin, you will know why Chengdu is renowned as Heavenly State and the abundant natural resources and cultural and historical heritages in this city will be worth a visit and make you indulge in pleasures without stop.
Currently, there are 8.5 pairs of normal trains shuttling between the two cities with duration of 10 – 18 hours. It costs CNY332/346/400 for a soft sleeper, CNY208/225/239/244 for a hard sleeper, and CNY 98/112/128 for a hard seat.

Aside from rail travel, one can also travel by flight or by coach from Chengdu to Xi'an or vice versa. There is no need to say that flights take the shortest time, about 1.5 – 2 hours, but cost the most, CNY 600 or so for an economy class seat. The coaches cost less, about CNY 200 – 240, but taking a long time of about 9 hours; in addition, it will be tiring and boring to travel by coach for such a long journey and the ticket is not easy to get for foreign passengers. One thing you also should know is that flights and coaches are more easily affected by weather than trains.

We are a group of 20. We took the train from Chengdu to Xian. Since we cannot speak Chinese, we requested 20 seats next to each other, when we book the train tickets online through TravelChinaGuide.com. The booking consultant replied and confirmed that they would surely book 20 tickets next to each other. When we were on the train, we sat near to each other as we asked. We had a wonderful trip in Xian.

My wife, our two children and I, came to visit China for two weeks. We went to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and our children would not like to leave for the pandas are so cute and funny. We called the agency on how to do if we miss the train. Finally, on the train, I received the calling from the girl to ask whether we made it. Thank you for your fellow up and professionalism.

Easy & very prompt communication with enquiries & booking process. Tickets were delivered to our hotel & handed to us at checkin. Excellent service for first time China train experience. First class seats were very spacious & comfortable. Highly recommend Travel China Guide!

What great service. I booked four legs of tickets for my family of two adults and two teens. Ivy helped us to issue all tickets together. For the overnight train from Beijing to Xian, a whole compartment was not available, so Ivy changed to a different but with similar time for us, which we much appreciated, it was very important for our family to be together. We will definitely book with her again next time.

We would like to upgrade second class seat tickets to the first class seat tickets. We were told we have to do it at station by ourself as we have collected the tickets. It was a little upsad as we did not know this in advance. Anyway, we managed to change it at the train station by ourselves.

The booking process was good and when tickets were not available for our preferred train we were given options and we got new tickets. The only problem was that there was an issue with our listed station. It was listed as Xian South when it was actually Xian North. Luckily a guide corrected us before we got our taxi otherwise we would have missed our train. Apart from this issue everything went well.
