Running Route of Xi'an - Chengdu High Speed Train

Xi'an - Jiangyou Railway: The construction of this section has begun since 2012 and it was completed on December 6th, 2017. The duration between Jiangyou and Xi'an is shortened to 3 hours or so. The designed highest speed is 250 km/h (155 mph) and the length is 534 kilometers (332 miles).

As this section will traverse Qinling Mountain, many tunnels and bridges have been planned to avoid detours, which account for about 92.1% of the whole Xi'an-Chengdu High Speed Rail Line. On October 13, 2016, the 9-kilometer-long (5.6 miles) Fuchuan Tunnel was cut through. Since then, all tunnels along the way have been finished and the constructors have started laying tracks in a large scale.

Jiangyou - Chengdu section: This section is a part of Chengdu - Mianyang - Leshan Intercity High Speed Railway which has been put into use since December 20th, 2014 and the length is 124 kilometers (77 miles). The current running speed is up to 124 mi/h (200 km/h) and the journey time is about 1 -2 hours. In addition, you can take this rail to visit Leshan Giant Buddha and Mt. Emei from Chengdu; the duration is about 45 - 90 minutes and 1 - 1.5 hours respectively.

What to see along the way

As the train goes through central Shaanxi Plain, Qinling Mountain to Sichuan Basin, the sceneries along the way will be a feast for the eyes. When traveling, the vast plain, the fertile land, well-growing crops, well-arranged houses and those who are working in the fields will give you a chance to see the lives of local peasants. The fresh air, blue sky, white cloud, green hills and blue waters between Qinling Mountains will make you want to stop and visit for a while. But you also should get ready as Chengdu to Xi'an High Speed Train and vice versa will go through several long tunnels in Qinling Mountains. When arriving at Sichuan Basin, you will know why Chengdu is renowned as Heavenly State and the abundant natural resources and cultural and historical heritages in this city will be worth a visit and make you indulge in pleasures without stop.
Currently, there are 8.5 pairs of normal trains shuttling between the two cities with duration of 10 – 18 hours. It costs CNY332/346/400 for a soft sleeper, CNY208/225/239/244 for a hard sleeper, and CNY 98/112/128 for a hard seat.

Aside from rail travel, one can also travel by flight or by coach from Chengdu to Xi'an or vice versa. There is no need to say that flights take the shortest time, about 1.5 – 2 hours, but cost the most, CNY 600 or so for an economy class seat. The coaches cost less, about CNY 200 – 240, but taking a long time of about 9 hours; in addition, it will be tiring and boring to travel by coach for such a long journey and the ticket is not easy to get for foreign passengers. One thing you also should know is that flights and coaches are more easily affected by weather than trains.

5 star- wonderful service, the best. The woman I reached on phone transferred me to live chat on the internet and walked me through every step of the process of securing a train ticket. Including finding options when my first choice was unavailable, walking me through every step to complete ticketing (including sending in passport photo). After ticketed you provided very detailed information on what to expect when picking up the ticket, etc.
Here are things that might be helpful specific to the train station at Chengdu airport:
    1. many of the employees at the airport have no idea where the train station is or that it even exists. Therefore would be helpful to let people know which terminal and which level the train station is at.
    2. Once I found it all was very straight forward - it was not a holiday weekend, there were no lines, all was rapid and efficient in picking up the ticket. I simply showed them by ticket pick up paper and passport. There were no additional charges or fees to pick up the ticket.
    3. Train ride itself (I was on fast train) -was great. Wonderful, helpful agents on board. the signage clearly indicated what station we were arriving at as well as the next to arrive.
Thanks again for everything you did in making me comfortable arriving in China and catching a train to my final destination.

The booking procedure was seamless, no problems at all. We were given the choice of trains according to schedule and availability. We were able to get our choice. Then we were given choice for delivery of tickets. We decided to pick them up at the train station, there was NO charge. All in all we were pleased with the booking service.
