Chengdu-Chongqing Train

As two famous tourist cities in southwest China, Chengdu is renowned as the natural habitat of lovely giant pandas and Chongqing is popular for its natural wonders and cultural heritage; besides, Chongqing is a terminal port for the amazing Yangtze River cruise. Are you interested in starting a journey between the two cities? If yes, how can you start your trip? At present, the preferred transportation between the two cities is no more than trains.

There are about 80 pairs of bullet trains running between Chengdu and Chongqing, the duration is 1.5 – 2.5 hours. There are also 8 or so pairs of normal types shuttling between the two cities with duration of 3 – 5.5 hours.

Besides, you can take a coach to travel from one city to the other and the ticket fare is almost the same as the second class seats on bullet trains. But it takes about 4.5 hours, a longer and not that comfortable journey, compared with a high speed rail trip.

High Speed Train

About 80 pairs of bullet types run between Chengdu / Chengdu East Railway Station and Chongqing North Railway Station currently. The journey time is about 1.5 – 2.5 hours. They are running along two different routes, including Chengdu-Chongqing Line with a total disatance of 194 miles (313 km) and Chengdu-Suining Line with a distance of 198 miles (319 km). The former line has stops at Jianyang, Ziyang, Zizhong, Neijiang, Rongchang, Dazu, Yongchuan, Bishan, and Shapingba; the latter line has stops at Daying, Suining, Tongnan, and Hechuan.

Most of them originate from/end in the Chengdu East Railway Station; the station is about 6 miles from Tianfu Square in city center and 14 miles from Shuangliu International Airport. City buses, taxis and subway line 2 are available here for your convenience. Only two pairs of them run to/from South Railway Station and this station is a little far from the city center and other places. Only D633 is operated to Chengdu Railway Station which is closer to city center and transportation to/from this station is very convenient; from there, you can easily go to the nearby attraction sites.

Most of them originate from/end in Chongqing North Railway Station, while a few others just have a stop there. So when you arrive or leave there, get prepared to detrain within 8 – 13 minutes and get onboard within 6 – 12 minutes.

Normal Train

 Length: 196 miles (315 km)
 Duration: Around 3 – 5.5 hours
Ticket price: CNY 140.5/146.5 for soft sleeper; CNY 92.5/96.5 for hard sleeper; CNY 46.5/50.5 for hard seat
Intermediate stops along the way: Suining, Tongnan, Beibei, and Hechuan

There are about 8 pairs of them running between the two cities currently. And all of them just use Chongqing Railway Station and North Railway Station as an intermediate stop. The former is close to the city center and it's convenient for you to go to other places upon arrival. But you can have more choices at the North Railway Station.

Although the normal types cost less compared with bullet types, there are less departures or arrivals, and the environment in the carriages is not good. If you choose hard seats, especially during the holidays, it will be rather crowded and make you tiresome. Thus, if possible, you'd better choose bullet type. However, if you have no other choice rather than normal types, you'd better purchase a sleeper even though it's a short journey. The sleeper will be more comfortable and you can have a more comfortable trip.

Thank you for the excellent service provided by Travel China Guide for our train trip from Chengdu to Chongqing. From the booking online to the delivery of our train tickets once we arrived in China and all the follow up emails to ensure that our trip went well! It was seamless and exceptional service.
The Chengdu East train station was very large and looked modern though be warned that there were only squatty pottys there, so I would recommend that Western visitors use their hotel facilities prior to arrival at the train station.
In addition, the food was relatively expensive for China and not very good at the train station. I would suggest that travelers buy their food for the train trip from somewhere else than the train station.
The only glitch that we had was not knowing which line to queue up on and had to ask someone with the different ticket colors. There did not appear to be enough seats in the boarding area . We did have a slight problem when we exited at Chongqing as we thought we had to insert the tickets in the exits as opposed to handing the ticket to the agent.
The train ride was very comfortable and finding the car and seat number was easy. We got to see the beautiful countryside and saw many rice paddies and farmers on our way to Chongqing.
We would highly recommend using Travel China Guide to book train travel in China!

We enjoy our trip by the bullet train. The online ticketing makes us easier. But need to consider to provide the e-ticket rather than the physical ticket. Thanks.

The online booking was quite easy and having everything in English was amazing!
Your response time to the bookings was great and also when a train was full you got us a replacement train and refunded the difference! In China the pick up for tickets was fairly easy as the tickets you send had everything in Chinese which again made things much easier for us!
The bullet trains were fantastic, very efficient and quick. The sleeper train was quite cramped and not much space- probably would have booked a first class seat if we known! Maybe some pictures online of the sleeping bunks of the second class and first class carriages to give people an idea. Other than that was really good service all around!...More
