Shanghai - Chengdu Train

Shanghai and Chengdu are two of major tourism destinations in China. Both normal and high speed trains are running between. The high speed ones all run in daytime, taking 11-15 hours. The ordinary ones travel overnight, but they take a long time of 30 to 38.5 hours. Although the sceneries along the way are not bad, it wastes a lot of time, especially for those who are pressed for time. In the case, high speed ones are better choices. After arriving and have a good rest over the night, one can travel around energetically and leisurely.

However, if you travel in a hurry, flight will be a good option, whose duration is about 3.5-5 hours. But it will generally cost you more.

High Speed Trains

All the three pairs of bullet trains are running between Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Chengdu East Railway Station. The travel time is two times less than the ordinary ones. But correspondingly, they are more expensive, even more expensive than the flight tickets in low season. They usually depart in the morning and arrive in the late evening, so you have a full day to relax yourself and admire the scenery along the way.

Four pairs of normal type sleeper trains are in service between the two cities at present. Although the ticket fare is much cheaper compared with the high speed ones, the long journey may make one annoying and dog-tired. To travel by it, you'd better buy a sleeper and buy one in advance because they are always in demand.

I traveled from Chengdu to Shanghai by bullet train, the ticket was booked by TravelChinaGuide. Booking the tickets through your website was very easy, also because it's very wise to book train tickets in advance.

I departed from Chengdu East Railway Station at 08:00. Metros in Chengdu start running early, so you can get to the station easily on time (I arrived at the station a little more than one hour before the train departure). The station has a west and east departure, so be sure to get to the right one. In my case I passed through the security check quite quickly. The waiting room on the station is very big and there are some restaurants etc., so waiting is not a drama. Boarding the train is convenient, you get in line and pass through the ticked gate. Then go to the right coach and find your seat, all information is on your ticket.

The train trip is not bad at all. Toilets are reasonably clean, but they get a little dirty during the almost 12 hours trip. There is a restaurant aboard, which I didn't use. There is also a trolley food service, which has quite good food and also drinks. The part of the trip during daytime is quite nice with different views of China. After it gets dark the trip gets a little boring.

This booking facility was an excellent opportunity for us. On a very easy, trustful and fast way we got our wanted train tickets. The customers of TCG booking center were very kind and the contact to them was clear and of an efficient nature.

The D-Train from Chengdu to Shanghai was a very modern train, equipped with comfortable and new furniture and the whole waggon was kept clean. What we had to get habituated with, was the heavily cooled down waggons and the nonstop ongoing air condition. People in our compartment were very kind and respectful....More

The Shanghai-Chengdu trip was excellent. The Shanghai Hongqiao departure station was the most comfortable, convenient, and organized that I have ever been in worldwide, even for a non-Chinese speaker. I was fortunate to have a bullet train and the first class seats were very comfortable and easy to find.

My journey was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Ivy dealt excellently with my booking. When I arrived at my hotel, they informed me that a parcel was delivered for me (my ticket! No hassle, no worries).

When I got to the station, my train number was on the board and along with the check-in gate. I asked at the information desk too, just to be sure I had it right, they were very helpful.

The check-in was a little confusing, I presumed that meant I had to do something prior to departure but actually, it is just showing your ticket before you go through the turn-style, onto the platform. About 30 minutes before the departure time, your number goes from red to green and the staff opens the check-in.

The toilets in the station are not great, but the toilet on the actual train is fine ( I was in first class, but presumably they are all the same). I had an excellent first class seat that was actually in the business class area. The staff was really lovely, serving tea when we boarded, soft drinks later and then lunch. I was also provided with slippers to make the journey even more comfortable.

Thanks China travel guide for an unforgettable experience!

Thank you for all your help in booking our tickets from Shanghai to Chengdu and back! We had a very enjoyable experience each way, and each experience was unique. We were glad we had chosen Executive Class seats on the G-train for our trip to Chengdu. We had just arrived in China on Sunday night, and our booking early the next Tuesday morning found us still jet-lagged. The Executive Class seats were exceedingly comfortable, and it was wonderful to have a dedicated cabin attendant, nicer restroom, and included meal. In addition, we appreciated the extra space to move about & observe the changing landscape along the way.
The 1st Class seats on the D-train on the way back were fine, and by then we were acclimated to the country & were more comfortable with making meal choices, as well as satisfied with the smaller seats.
For those who can afford it, we recommend the Executive Class, when available, and the 1st Class seating when the Executive Class is not.
We will definitely recommend your travel services to others. Our tickets were at our hotel, as promised, and were handed to us on arrival. This saved a lot of time and confusion at the Hong Qiao Station, and the staff there directed us easily to our train’s boarding area. By the time we rode back, we felt very comfortable in finding the boarding area on our own.
The billing, through PayPal, was handled as promised, and was very easy & convenient.
Thank you for assisting us in planning our trip! We had a wonderful time, and are already planning a return visit in the near future!

Everything was very high level and professionally!
List of my trains was very easy and only one transfer was on two trains with change. I thought that 2 hours for change will be enough, but Josey persuaded me in opposite. I confirmed new schedule with change 3 hours, which she advised me. In final my first train arrived before departure of the second only 30 min!
Also Josey helped me with delivery of my tickets to hotel. Hotel's staff lost express delivery and didnt speak English. Only her help saved me!
Thank you for all. I guess that my trip through whole China by 6 trains didn't happen without your outstanding service!
