Xiamen Weather in March

Frequent clashes of cold and warm air currents make the weather in Xiamen complex and changeable in March. At the beginning, the high temperature climbs to 20 - 25 degrees Celsius (68 – 77 degrees Fahrenheit), and under the sun, people feel particularly warm. However, it can drop dramatically to 10 - 13℃ (50 - 55.4℉) with the sudden visit of cold air, as if returning to winter instantly. Even on steadily sunny days, the day-night temperature difference is big, with a maximum of 13℃ (23.4℉). As a result, the air humidity reaches high at 83%. After the rain, the weather turns clearly sunny. 
 Visiting Xiamen in March 2026, you may find the wall and floor of your room are “sweating”, and your clothes in wardrobes are wet, a climatic phenomenon called “hui nan tian” locally. This is caused by warm and humid air flowing into cool shady room, and it is expected to temporarily end when a new wave of cold air arrives. 

To deal with this kind of condition, keep the door and windows of your hotel room closed in the morning and evening. At the same time, adjust the air conditioner to dehumidification mode. Try not to wash your clothes unless you plan to stay for a long time as they don’t dry easily, and be careful when walking on slippery floors and roads. Besides, pay attention to the safety of using electricity, as the electrical equipment is prone to moisture.
 March is the month with the most foggy days in Xiamen throughout the year, averagely 8 from the recorded data. Fog mostly forms from late night to early morning and doesn’t dissipate until almost noon when the temperature rises and wind speeds increase. Visibility can be poor under foggy conditions, significantly affecting ferry’s operation. 
 There are 12 hours of daylight in March from 6:00 - 6:30 to 18:10 - 18:23, which is enough for day activities. However, the city doesn’t have rich sunshine this month due to some rainy and foggy days. The sunlight duration is only 4 hours every day on average. When it turns sunny, the sunshine can be strong, making it necessary to take sun protection measures. 
 Wearing layers is the key to dealing with tense temperature changes within the day. 

A single hoodie with jeans is a good match in the sunny time. Women who want to wear long-sleeve dress need leggings. It’s important to add some sun protection accessories, like sunglasses and sunscreen. Before sunrise and after sunset, an additional trench coat or leather jacket is needed to deal with relatively low temperatures, which is also useful to resist the wind by the sea. Meanwhile, a raincoat is more suitable under rainy conditions. As for shoes, sneakers are good choices.
 1. With relatively warm climate, Xiamen has an earlier flowering period than some inland and northern China cities. Entering March, you can appreciate vast cherry blossoms at Cherry Blossom Valley on Huwei Mountain and rape flowers at Licun Village at Jimei. Pear flowers bloom at Xiamen Botanical Garden for a short time, and be sure to choose sunny weather in mid-March to visit.

2. There are not so many visitors at popular destinations including Gulangyu Island, Hulishan Fortress, South Putuo Temple, Island Ring Road and Zengcuo’an Village in March, so you can visit unhurriedly.

3. Choose completely sunny days to visit popular Gulangyu Island in case strong fog make the ferry out of service. If encountering the suspension unfortunately, change to some downtown spots.

4. If you are allergic to pollens, remember to wear a mask at attractions with blooming flowers. At the same time, carry some anti-allergy medicine.

5. Prepare some medicine for a cold in case of need, as it’s the high season for flu.
