Xiamen Weather in August

With high temperature of 28 - 34 degrees Celsius (82.4 - 93.2 degrees Fahrenheit), the weather is quite hot in August. In some areas, high temperatures can reach 35℃ (95℉) continuously for more than 5 days. The perceived temperature often reaches over 38℃ (100.4℉) in the sun. At night, the temperature drops to 25 - 26℃ (77 - 78.8℉), but the actual feeling remains almost unchanged unless at the seaside with a cool breeze.
 August sees the highest precipitation in a year, 209 mm (8.2 in) on average; however, the number of rainy days is not big, only 11. This is because rainstorm brought by typhoons is the main rainfall type. In this peak month for typhoons, especially in the latter half, Xiamen can be affected by typhoons 2 - 3 times. They often bring a temporary decrease in temperature and rainstorms for consecutive 3 - 5 days, accounting for approximately 70% of the monthly precipitation. 

On other days, sunny weather takes the majority. Even if it rains, the rainfall comes quickly and leaves soon, sometimes only lasting for half an hour. Thunderstorms and sunny rain are common in the afternoon. Besides, the weather change may not be caught in time by the forecast, so you don’t need to worry a lot if you find some rainy days before departure.
 The air humidity remains a high 82%, which far exceeds the value that keeps the human body comfortable. It prevents the sweat evaporation and thus creates a sweltering “steamer”, easily making people feel sticky, especially in the afternoon.
 The sunshine duration lasts for about 8 hours per day on average. If you plan to travel to Xiamen in August 2026, pay attention to the strong sunshine with the highest UV index of the year. Your exposed skin can get sunburned within 15 minutes when conducting outdoor activities between 12 pm - 4 pm. So try to avoid going out during this period. Don’t worry. You have plenty of time left for traveling, because of the long daylight of 13 hours from 5:36 - 5:48 to 18:27 - 18:51.
 August is a challenging time for Xiamen trip. High temperature and humidity as well as strong sunshine jointly make people not that comfortable during outings. Possible typhoons accompanied by rainstorms also have an effect on the itinerary. For example, ferries to Gulangyu Island may stop service temporarily. Besides, China summer vacation incurs a travel peak season in the city. At some hot attractions, like Gulangyu Island, South Putuo Temple, Baicheng Beach, Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, and Jimei, you see crowds. Also, flight and hotel rate soars. 

However, for water activity enthusiasts, it’s often considered a good time due to warm sea water and a wide choice of entertainment.
  Breathable summer clothes in light colors: Chiffon short shirt and linen shorts are the best choices, which can absorb sweat quickly and thus reduce uncomfortable feelings. Women can also wear a beautiful beach dress by the sea. When conducting night activities near the sea, light pants are advised for the purpose of blocking mosquitoes. Tight-fitting clothes are not suitable for the muggy climate of Xiamen in August.

 Breathable and comfortable shoes: Lightweight sandals can be your choices, because you may walk for a long time during your trips. They also work well when having fun by the sea.

 Essential accessories: Sunglasses, sun hat, and sunscreen are needed to avoid direct exposure to sunlight. Besides, prepare a portable raincoat in your backpack to deal with possible rainfall.
 1. Visit open-air sites like Hulishan Fortress and Huihe Stone Cultural Park in mornings and evenings with relatively lower temperature, that is, before 10 am and after 4 pm. Alternative indoor spots for escaping the noon heat include Tan Kah Kee Memorial Hall at Jimei and Shuzhuang Garden and Hi Heaven Villa on Gulangyu Island. When strolling along Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, small shops with air conditioning can be temporary cool escapes.

2. In the evening, you can go to bustling Zengcuo’an Village night market to taste all kinds of local snacks, or attend an outdoor concert on the beach.

3. To reduce sweating in the sun, bind up your long hair and use a portable small fan all the time. Besides, carry heatstroke medicine with you just in case.

4. Insect repellent is useful when visiting Gulangyu Island and Xiamen Botanical Garden where insects are active.

5. Travelers need to focus on the warning information in advance and avoid typhoon days for traveling.
