The temperature remains high overall, especially at noon with strong sunshine. In the daytime, it keeps above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and reaches 34℃ (93.2℉) often, easily making people feel hot. But unlike in the peak of summer, it’s generally tolerable. During the rainy periods, the high temperature can drop to as low as 26℃ (78.8℉). But with high humidity, the perceived temperature doesn’t change significantly. In the evening, the temperature remains steady at 24 - 27℃ (75.2 - 80.6℉); in coastal areas, it’s somewhat cool when the sea wind blows.

There are about 4 - 6 rainy days in normal circumstances, and thunderstorms and heavy showers with a short duration are the most common. If you encounter one accidently, just seek shelters and wait for it to leave soon. Besides, the rainfall is sometimes unpredictable. However, when typhoons visit, continuous rainstorms appear, making up the majority of the total rainfall. It usually lasts 3 - 4 days each time.

Air humidity remains a high level, 78% on average. In humid coastal areas like Gulangyu Island and Huangcuo Beach, fog occasionally appears in early morning and dissipates gradually with the sunrise, existing for about 1 - 3 hours.
 Although cloudy days account for most of September, Xiamen enjoys rich sunshine, 8 hours daily on average. Also, the UV rays is high all the time. At many popular destinations, there are only a few shades, making it the priority to take sun protection measures. Only on typhoon days does it see the sun for less than 3 hours. 

A long daytime of 13 hours, which begins from 5:48 - 5:59 and ends at 17:55 - 18:26, offer travelers enough time for sightseeing.
 According to the historical data, typhoon weather visits Xiamen 1 - 2 times in early September. When it lands, it rains heavily and continuously, with lightning occurring at the same time. Ferry service, which is sensitive to wind force, may be suspended; some attractions are likely to be closed temporarily. The influence usually lasts for 2 - 3 days. When it leaves, the air gets fresher, offering good conditions for outdoor visiting. You can speculate weather forecast to avoid going there in typhoon days.
 Overall, traveling to Xiamen in September has more benefits than drawbacks. 

It’s in shoulder season. So, you won’t need to queue up for hot restaurants and will not meet big crowds at popular attractions such as Gulangyu Island, South Putuo Temple, Hulishan Fortress, and Jimei. The prices of hotels and flight tickets are also not that high. Besides, various sea foods are in season, and you can taste them at Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street and Zengcuo’an Village. Warm sea water is still attractive to water activity lovers.

However, possible typhoons should be taken into consideration. You need to always pay attention to the alert information, and setting 1 - 2 days of flexible time can help ensure a good experience. What’s more, although not scorching, the high temperatures during the daytime easily make those who are sensitive to heat feel uncomfortable.
 Normal summer clothes are suitable for Xiamen’s climate in September. 

 Up: Breathable short shirt can dissipate sweat quickly. At the same time, prepare a sun protection jacket to deal with strong sunshine and low temperatures at indoor spots with strong air conditioning.

 Bottom: Quick-dry shorts are advisable. For women, summer dress can also be chosen, but at the seaside, replace it with shorts in case of getting wet from the water.

 Shoes: On sightseeing days, wear light casual shoes for keeping comfortable during long-distance walk. When having fun by the seaside, you can wear a pair of sandals or slippers.

 1. Check the weather conditions one more time just before departure and adjust your visiting order of attractions accordingly, as the long-term forecast cannot predict the weather accurately. 

2. On the Gulangyu Island, you can only sightsee by walk. If feeling very hot, go to indoor spots with air conditioning like Shuzhuang Garden and Hi Heaven Villa for a short break.

3. Avoid the short travel high season during 3-day holiday of Mid-Autumn Day on September 25 - 27, 2026. 

4. Try to stay indoor at the hottest time of the day. Set off early in the morning, and go back to hotel to have a rest when the sun shines brightly. When it turns not that hot, go out again to keep visiting around and then enjoy wonderful night life. It’s particularly advised for those who hate high temperatures. They can also pack a portable fan to get some cool.
