October in Xiamen belongs to a transition period from hot summer to cool autumn. In the first half of the month, the high temperature often remains at 29 - 31 degrees Celsius (84.2 - 86 degrees Fahrenheit), a little bit hot in the sun; when night falls, it gets somewhat cool with a low temperature of 21 - 23℃ (69.8 - 73.4℉). At coastal areas such as Gulangyu Island where the sea wind blows, the actual feeling can be comfortable, particularly in the shade. 

The weather of Xiamen gets more favorable after mid-October. High temperature often drops below 30℃ (68℉) as the subtropical high leaves, which is an ideal value for outings. 
 October marks the end of the rainy season of Xiamen. There are only 3 rainy days with a total precipitation of 36 mm (1.4 in). The rainfall mostly appears in showers, with strong winds often taking place in the afternoon, which don’t hover for a long period or cover a large area. Therefore, continuous sunny days dominate. One thing worth mentioning is that the forecast for the climate of Xiamen in October is not always accurate, and you are advised to check the real-time conditions before setting off to the destination.

Find a Shade to Get Cool on Gulangyu Island

In October, Xiamen often has clear and cloudless sky, ensuring rich sunshine of averagely 6 hours a day. UV rays are still strong with a maximum index of 11. So don’t be exposed to sunlight directly for a long time.  According to historical records, typhoon which brings strong winds and heavy rainfall affects Xiamen in October once every 3 - 4 years on average. It is more likely to occur in the first half of the month. Tourists need to pay attention to the warnings and avoid traveling to coastal areas or even not go out on typhoon days.
  During the daytime: It’s advisable to wear a T-shirt with shorts in the early month; girls can also wear summer dresses. If in the middle month, switch to a shirt with light pants. 

 In the morning and evening: Add a thin coat as the outer layer, particularly when you plan to do activities at the seaside where sea wind blows and visit night markets till late. 

 Shoes: Two pairs of shoes are needed: slippers for water activities; and comfortable casual shoes for city sightseeing, because at some attractions like Gulangyu Island and Island Ring Road, you can only visit here and there by walk.

 Necessities: Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sun hats, sunglasses, and other sun protection products to cope with strong UV rays. Besides, carry insect repellent when traveling around on Gulangyu Island and in the Botanical Garden.
 1. The holiday will extend from October 1 to 7, forming a travel peak season. You should better avoid this period. If you still plan to go, book a flight/train ticket, hotel, and the ferry to the Gulangyu Island early. At the same time, be prepared to meet crowds at hot attractions in the city, such as Gulangyu Island, South Putuo Temple, Hulishan Fortress, and Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Stree.

2. To avoid the main crowds, you can go to some spots less popular instead. For example, choose from Yefengzhai Beach, Guanyinshan Beach, and Zhenzhuwan Beach that local people prefer instead of the hottest Baicheng Beach. Besides, setting off early is also useful.

3. Leave yourself sufficient time for transportation, especially when you plan to take the ferry or head to the railway station or airport, as traffic jams often occur during the holiday. 

4. Restaurants near tourist attractions sometimes raise their price. If you want to taste authentic food at an affordable price, choose those far away and in local communities.
