Xiamen in January has the lowest temperature of the year, but relatively speaking, the weather is not that cold overall. The sunny daytime often sees a temperature of 14 - 20 degrees Celsius (57.2 - 68 degrees Fahrenheit); after sunset, the low temperature mostly varies between 7 - 13℃ (44.6 - 55.4℉) and rarely drops below 5℃ (41℉). You don’t even need to wear thick winter clothes. 

In coastal areas, like Gulangyu Island and Island Ring Road, the perceived temperatures are several degrees Celsius lower due to sea winds. In most cases, the climate in Xiamen remains steady in January. Cold air strikes only occasionally, bringing down the temperature by 5 - 8℃ (9 - 14.4℉).

Only 7 days are rainy on average with a total precipitation of 34 mm (1.3 in). It often appears in the form of light rain or showers; continuous heavy rain hardly occurs. Without extremely cold weather, it’s hard to see snowfall, either. Besides, there are about 3 - 4 foggy days when cold waves pass. The fog usually doesn’t last for a long time, and often disappears quickly after the sun rises.

 In coastal areas
Wear a bottoming shirt and a knitwear or hoodie as the inner layer. For the outer, fleece windbreaker is the best, which can help to resist strong wind, or you can choose from a wool overcoat or thin down coat. As for the bottom, thick jeans or sweatpants with long johns are OK. Put on a thin scarf when you take a ferry. Besides, carry sunglasses and sunscreen to deal with UV rays under the sun. If you encounter the rain by accident, a raincoat would be better than an umbrella. 

 In downtown parts
Adopt the same match as in coastal areas in morning and night as well as during rainy periods. Just remove the outer windbreaker and accessories in the sun.

 Shoes
A pair of sneakers is suitable for a long walk in winter, especially on stone roads on Gulangyu Island. For having fun by the sea, slippers are not advised, as it can be cold. You can choose ankle boots or walking boots.
 

Travel Advice for Xiamen in January

1. You can often have a cost-effective Xiamen trip in January, which belongs to the low travel season. Flight and hotels are cheaper than usual, and popular attractions, such as Baicheng Beach, Hulishan Fortress, South Putuo Temple, and Jimei Study Village, don’t see crowds. But things would be different when the lunar Chinese New Year appears in January. By then, you need to spend more with increasing price, and the scenic areas are full of people.

2. Check the real-time service condition of ferries to Gulangyu Island, which may be out of service under strong winds.

3. If you prefer a warm environment during the trip, set outdoor sightseeing at 9:00 – 16:00 when the sun shines, and avoid early morning and late evening.

4. Be careful not to slip when taking pictures on the rock by the sea, as the wind and waves can sometimes be strong.
