Temperature
In August, Zhangjiajie downtown still suffers from the hot summer weather. On most days, the highest temperature is about 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). Sometime, it can soar up to around 40°C (105°F). Even in the coolest hours of the day, the temperature remain at about 25°C (77°F).
However, this doesn’t mean that you will have a terrible traveling experience: most attractions of Zhangjiajie are located in mountains, where the temperature is about 5 - 10°C (9 - 18°F) lower than that of the urban area, providing you some coolness in the hot summer.
Rainfall
For Zhangjiajie, August still belongs to the rainy season. However, compared with June and July, when the average monthly rainfall is over 200 mm, this month has much lower rainfall: on average, the city receives about 120 mm of rain in about 18 days in August.
Most of the time, the rain will not last long, but it may be heavy occasionally. Furthermore, in August with high temperature, fog easily forms in mountain areas during and after the rain. When the fog is light, it can provide you with a fairy-tale-like landscape; however, if the fog is heavy, you will see nothing.

A Not-Very-Recommended Month to Visit Zhangjiajie
In summer days, Zhangjiajie is full of green with birds' twitter, and the air is fresh with a high level of negative oxygen ions. However, from the perspectives of weather, cost and travel experience, August is not a very recommended month to explore Zhangjiajie:
(1) Though high-altitude attractions are cool and comfortable, low-altitude areas are hot at over 35°C (95°F), meaning transition from the railway station or airport to the hotel, and from the hotel to the scenic spots, and waiting in line at the entrance of the scenic spots can be suffering.

(2) The rain is intense sometimes, leading to the closure of some attractions like Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge and some activities like rafting. What’s worse, the rain may lead to heavy fog that veils everything.
(3) August is in summer vacation in China: the famous attractions can be quite crowded and the hotel prices stay high, especially in the first half month.

3. And it is advisable to book the ticket for the first time slot and try to enter the scenic spot when it’s just open. By doing so, you can largely avoid queues both at the entrance and within the attractions in crowded August.
4. Reserve hotels in advance, too. During such peak travel seasons, the earlier you make reservations, the more options you will have and the less money you may spend.
5. Be well prepared for the changeable weather of Zhangjiajie in August:
(1) Several days before your trip, when there are already fairly accurate weather forecasts for the days of your trip and the itinerary is still relatively easy to adjust, confirm whether it will rain. If it does, try to adjust your itinerary promptly, as thick fog is likely to form under such weather conditions, which may cause low visibility. Alternatively, you could consider visiting places like Furong Ancient Town and Phoenix Ancient Town, which are less affected by rain.
