Cold Temperatures

Hohhot in November experiences a colder and colder climate. The high temperatures during the midday usually range from 4-11 degrees Celsius (39-52 degrees Fahrenheit). By late month, the daytime highs are only around 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), making a thick overcoat necessary. If the cold air strikes, the high temperature can drop to -5°C (23°F).

Noticeably, Hohhot at night can be extremely cold, with the lowest temperature dropping to -12°C (10°F). Grasslands and other surrounding areas are even colder. Therefore, it’s not a good idea to stay overnight in a Mongolian yurt on the grassland.

Additionally, you should be aware that the temperature is not cold enough for the Qiandao Lake to freeze over. Thus, it’s not the time to play on the frozen lake yet. But you can still watch birds on the water.

Low Amount of Precipitation

November marks the dry season in Hohhot, with an average precipitation of 4 mm over 3 days. Because of global warming, in recent years, you might still witness light rainfall this month. It’s more likely to see snowfall in the suburban areas.

Dry Air and Strong Winds

Hohhot’s climate in November remains quite dry, with an average humidity level of only 55 %. Moreover, strong winds often blow, making breathing through your nose uncomfortable. Therefore, it’s wise to wear a mask to protect your nose and face.

Sunshine Hours and Daylight Hours

Inner Mongolia Museum

Sunrise Time: 07:03 – 07:37
Sunset Time: 17:06 – 17:29
Daytime Hours: 9.5 – 10.5 hours
Sunlight Hours: about 6.5 hours per day

Hohhot in November experiences shortening daylight hours, requiring visitors to plan their trip wisely. Sunrise is a bit late, so you don’t have to wake up too early to catch it at Qiandao Lake. But the darkness comes up quickly, meaning you should come back to the urban area early, as nights can be particularly cold in the suburbs.

Besides, the duration of sunshine is decreasing, but it’s still enough for daily outdoor activities. If you check the forecast, and find that it will be a cloudy or snowy day, we recommend that you visit some indoor attractions, including Dazhao Temple, Inner Mongolia Museum and Xilituzhao Palace. Anyway, the sunny conditions are more favorable for outings and taking beautiful pictures.

What to Wear in Hohhot in November 2026

Upper Clothing: During midday, when the temperature is relatively higher, a warm sweater or a hoodie paired with a thick overcoat is usually enough. At cold nights, visitors should replace the overcoat with a windproof downcoat or add a down vest inside. For trips to the suburban area, a 3-in-1 windbreaker is more practical.

Bottom Clothing: Thermal underwear coupled with thick jeans or fleece-lined sweatpants is a perfect outfit for your downtown visits. It’s advisable to wear a pair of windproof hiking pants, if you want to explore the suburban areas.

Footwear: Non-slip hiking boots are perfect for outdoor explorations; comfortable sneakers are suitable for urban sightseeing.

Accessories:
A lip balm and moisturizer are helpful to ease the uncomfortable dryness during your journey.
A warm hat, gloves and an ear muff are essential to resist cold winds.
A bright-colored scarf is useful to stay warm and stylish.
If you are sensitive to UV rays, it’s best to pack sunscreen.

Travel Advice and Tips

1. November is not a good month to visit Hohhot: grasslands are bare, winds blow strongly and the lake is not frozen yet for ice fun. If you insist to come, it’s more recommended to stay in the city and explore the historical heritages there. You may visit Dazhao Temple, rent a set of traditional Mongolian costume and take impressive photos. After that, pick up souvenirs and taste delicious food at Wide Narrow. Although the night comes early, the night view at Saishanglaojie Street won’t disappoint you.
2. If you decide to enjoy the natural landscape in the suburban areas, like Qiandao Lake, Hongshiya Cliff, and Hadamen National Forest Park, don’t forget to check the forecast and choose a sunny day, when the temperature is a bit higher.
3. November is the low season in Hohhot. There are fewer tourists and lower travel costs. But some attractions would shorten their opening hours or even close. For instance, Hadamen National Forest Park is closed since mid-November; so don’t forget to check the related information before setting off.
