Except at midday when the temperature feels quite hot, the perceived temperature in other times usually hovers around 20-something degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit), perfect for various outdoor activities. When the evening breeze blows gently, it feels like there was a natural air conditioner.
 

July is part of Hohhot’s rainy season, with an average precipitation of 102 mm over 13 rainy days. Most rainfall comes as light and short showers, which don’t influence the sightseeing greatly but help cool down the temperature. And sometimes you may even feel a bit cold after the rainfall. 
 

However, in certain years, heavy downpours or thunderstorms can occur. For example, in July 2025, unusually frequent storms caused flash floods in some suburban areas, leading to cancellations of some activities and temporary road closures; plus, heavy rainfall caused traffic issues in urban areas.

July is the peak season for tourism across China, especially for family trips and study tours. However, Hohhot, as a unique tourism city, remains much less crowded than many major destinations.

Because of increasing temperatures and precipitation, the grasslands grow prosperously, extremely vibrant and green. The sky is clear, the clouds look like cotton, and the landscape is as beautiful as an oil painting, which is perfect for photography.

1. Naadam Festival

Naadam events take place across Inner Mongolia throughout July. There are many Naadam celebrations held on the grasslands near Hohhot. Among those celebrations, one of the largest events is held on the Xilinguole Grassland, where you can experience authentic Mongolian culture. However, Xilinguole Grassland is about 700 km (430 miles) from Hohhot. Luckily, within the city of Hohhot, Dahei River Military Culture Park hosts urban Naadam events, including horse shows, wrestling, archery demonstrations and a variety of local food. Just remember to check the exact date of the celebration before your heading. 
 

2. Grasslands Tour 

In July, the grasslands of Hohhot are lush and thriving, at their best viewing period. We recommend visiting the following grasslands: Chilechuan Highland Grassland, Huitengxile Grassland and these along the way to Hongshiya Cliff.

1. July’s climate in Hohhot changes quickly, sometimes shifting from bright sunshine to grey sky and even rain in a short period. Thus, you are advised to keep an eye on forecasts and adjust your travel plans accordingly. If the weather is not suitable for outdoor explorations, you can visit Inner Mongolia Museum, Dazhao Temple and Xilituzhao Palace. 

2. Grassland highways and festival areas can get congested. Please plan enough time for transportation. 

3. Although Hohhot sees much fewer visitors than many hot-spot places, like Beijing, popular attractions still draw long lines during the summer vacation, and there is a noticeable increase in accommodation rates. 

4. Grasslands, parks, and museums are noticeably quieter on weekdays. Plus, departing early in the morning is helpful to avoid the main crowds and have better travel experience.
