Cool Days, Cold Nights

Overall, Hohhot’s weather in October is cool in the daytime, and a windbreaker is usually enough for your outings. The daytime highs in the first half of October range from 18 to 22 degrees Celsius (64-72 degrees Fahrenheit). Entering the second half, daytime highs might drop to around 11-15 degrees Celsius (52-59 degrees Fahrenheit). However, if cold air masses sweep through the city, temperatures can plunge by as much as 8°C (46°F). Plus, strong winds make perceived temperatures colder, making a downcoat necessary.

At night, the climate can be freezing, making you feel like in winter. In the past five years, the lowest temperature in October recorded -6°C (21°F). In the suburbs, like in Hadamen National Forest Park, you can even spot frost forming on the trees.

Slight Precipitation

Hohhot in October receives limited rainfall, with an average precipitation of 21 mm from 5 days. It can be slight rain, sleet or even snowfall, usually followed by strong winds and a significant temperature drop.

In the city center, the snowfall melts down soon. But in the surrounding areas, the snowfall lingers for quite a while, presenting you with a winter scene, which can be one of the highlights of Hohhot travel in October.

Dry Air

The small amount of precipitation is unlikely to alleviate the dry air. The average humidity level remains around 56 %. If you head to the suburban areas, the air can be drier because of stronger wind, and your nose might feel uncomfortable after you spend too much time outdoors without wearing a mask.

Sunshine Hours and Daylight Hours

Sunrise Time: 06:29 - 07:02
Sunset Time: 17:30 - 18:15
Sunlight Hours: about 8 hours per day

October sees shortening daylight time, about 10.5-11.5 hours. This situation requires visitors to plan their trip wisely, so as to make the most of their time. For example, it’s highly recommended to arrange the main outdoor attractions at 10:00 to 16:00, when the sunlight is abundant and the temperature is pleasant. After 16:00, temperatures would drop significantly, especially in suburban areas, and the sky would gradually become dark.

In terms of Sunlight hours, Hohhot still enjoys abundant sunshine despite occasional rainfall or snowfall. And you should not underestimate the UV rays even though the weather is cloudy or rainy.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Hohhot?

Yes. Overall, October is one of the best times to visit Hohhot.

Firstly, Hohhot in October has a cool and dry climate, with abundant sunshine. As long as you wear proper clothes and plan your trip wisely, you will definitely have a great travel experience. Secondly, October offers the last chance to enjoy a unique autumn view in Hohhot, with yellow leaves and even the first snowfall. Thirdly, October is the shoulder season, except early days during China National Day holiday, when hotel and flight prices fall back and attractions become quiet.

But as mentioned above, early October, coinciding with one of the most important public holidays in China: National Day Holiday, is not included in the best time. During this period, you might find it extremely difficult to book train tickets. In addition, the attractions are overcrowded, and hotel rates are skyrocketing.

Travel Advice and Tips

1. You are highly recommended to visit Hadamen National Forest Park around mid-October, where the golden pine forest perfectly combines with light snow. But you need to notice the opening hours are from 9:00 to 18:00, and visitors are not allowed to enter after 16:30.
2. Although crowded, early October is the prime time to appreciate the autumn view at Jiulongwan Scenic Area, about a 2-hour drive from Hohhot city center. Reaching the viewing platform, you can take in the panoramic view of the colorful scenery, as beautiful as an oil painting. One of the top things to do there is to stroll along the transparent walkway, with water flowing beneath your feet and red leaves overhead.
3. It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast in advance, especially if you decide to visit Hohhot’s suburban areas. Poor weather conditions can affect the scenery and may even pose dangers to you.
