The average high daytime temperature in Lhasa's July is about 23°C/73°F. During summer the temperature here is almost the same as other mainland cities in summer. Ultraviolet rays are stronger than ever, and the weather is hot at noon. There are still differences in temperature between day and night but they are less than in winter. The rainy season begins in July with most rain coming at night and there is a cool wind.

Lhasa enters its high season for tourists this month and visitors come in greater numbers from all over the world. Demand for transportation and accommodations increases making this a relatively expensive time to travel.

What to Wear in Lhasa in July

Long trousers, long-sleeved shirts and sun hat are suggested to avoid sunburn. A thin jacket or coat is needed for nighttime. Considering the climate in July in Lhasa, you should also be prepared with a wind-resistant jacket, rain pants, and rain shoes. You will need a down jacket or other warm clothes, hiking and climbing boots if you plan to visit Mount Everest or Ngari.

Things to Do in Lhasa in July

Potala Palace is always a highlight for Lhasa visitors. Due to the large number of tourists in July, visitors should obtain an entrance ticket the day before either by themselves or through a travel agency. If you want to try authentic Tibetan food, we highly recommended the Xue Shen Gong Tibetan restaurant near the west wall of Potala Palace and Makye Ame at the southeast corner of Barkhor Street. A visit to Jokhang Temple is suggested for those who are interested in Tibetan Buddhism. BTW, sweet-tea house can be found everywhere in Lhasa. This is a great place for tourists to join the locals at night.

Some tips to help you deal with the altitude: Do not run or walk too fast, especially when you first arrive at Lhasa; avoid overeating, drinking and smoking; eat more vegetables and fruits to increase fluid intake, and take drinking water when going out. Rains are frequent this month, which may trigger mud and landslides along the Yarlung Zangbo River and mountainous area so visitors should better avoid mountain climbing or wading. Sunscream and lip balm are always necessary for visitors to Lhasa.
