Lhasa Weather in November

November is the end of autumn in Lhasa. At this time of year, the weather of Lhasa has two most notable characteristics: First, there is a huge temperature difference between day and night. During the daytime, especially around noon, it is hardly cold at all, but as soon as the sun goes down, the temperature drops sharply, and it feels quite chilly. Second, the air is very dry, and there are many sunny days. It is no exaggeration to say that you may experience no rainy weather during your stay, no matter when you plan to visit Lhasa in November and how long you are staying.

It’s also worth mentioning that November is the slack season in Lhasa, when quieter attractions and lower costs are offered.

Temperature

In the First Half of the Month
At this time, the daily high temperature of Lhasa typically hovers around 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit). Because the sun is quite strong in Lhasa, the daytime hours when the sun is shining generally boast a fairly comfortable climate: warm or cool but not cold. Between 12:00 and 14:00, when the sun is at its strongest, the apparent temperature can even approach 20°C (68°F) sometimes. However, once the sun sets, the temperature drops rapidly by about 10°C (18°F), and it immediately feels cold. The daily lowest temperature can drop to about 0°C (32°F), and it only begins to rise slowly when the sun comes up.

In the Second Half of the Month
During this period, daily highs in Lhasa typically range from 8 to 13°C (46-55°F). However, thanks to the warmth brought by the sunshine, it generally doesn’t feel very cold, either. Daily lows are around -5 to 0°C (23-32°F), meaning evenings and early mornings are very cold.

Precipitation

In November, Lhasa generally enjoys sunny weather throughout the month: there is an average of only 2 mm of precipitation and just one day with rain or snow. The sunny weather means you can see Lhasa’s most beautiful sights: the shining Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Norbulingka bathed in sunlight; even more azure Namtso Lake and Yamdrok Lake against the blue sky; and clearly visible snow-capped mountains under the clear skies…

However, you should also be aware that due to the extremely low precipitation, the air is very dry, and you may find yourself difficult to adjust to it. Symptoms such as a dry and sore throat and dry skin are common. Therefore, it is essential to keep a humidifier running at all times while resting in your hotel and to drink plenty of water.

Daylight Hours & Sunshine Hours

At the beginning of the month, sunrise and sunset occur at around 8:09 and 19:09, respectively; by the end of the month, sunrise is delayed to 8:32, while sunset is brought forward to 18:56. Therefore, please note that: Daylight hours are gradually shortening, from about 11 hours to less than 10.3 hours. Due to this, some attractions shorten their opening hours. For example, the Potala Palace’s operating hours are adjusted from 9:00-15:40 to 9:30-15:20; the Tibet Museum’s operating hours are adjusted from 9:30-17:30 to 10:30-17:00.

As the weather is mostly sunny, sunshine hours are at their longest in the year, averaging 9 hours per day. The midday sunshine remains quite strong, so be sure to take proper sun protection measures.

Tips for Visiting Lhasa in November

1. The oxygen level decreases in November, so various measures are recommended to prevent altitude sickness. Specifically, please make sure to rest well after your arrival, do not take a shower on your first day in Lhasa, avoid running or walking too fast, and avoid overeating.
2. Since the temperature fluctuates significantly throughout the day, you are recommended to check the hourly forecast before heading out each day and deciding what to wear based on that.
3. In November, higher-altitude areas such as Namtso Lake and Yamdrok Lake may experience heavy snowfall. While shores covered in white snow are also beautiful, heavy snow can sometimes block roads and cause temporary closure of scenic areas. So, always pay attention to the weather forecast and try to arrange the visit to these places on sunny days.
