US - China Flight Quotas Fully Used, Making China More Accessible for American Tourists
Published: 10/09/2026
On October 7, 2026, Delta Air Lines officially increased its Shanghai Pudong International Airport - Los Angeles International Airport flights from three to five weekly. With this capacity expansion, the bilateral flight quotas between China and the United States have been fully utilized for the first time. Under current agreement, China and U.S. airlines are each permitted to operate a maximum of 50 scheduled round-trip passenger flights per week. In total, there are 200 one-way flights between China and the United States every week.
For American travelers planning trips to China, Delta’s flight increase delivers real-world travel benefits. Two additional direct flights between Los Angeles and Shanghai each week offer greater flexibility of travel time. Compared with a few years ago, the situations of limited flight options, lengthy connecting journeys and exhausting long-distance travel are now behind us. The sharp growth in direct flight services has considerably lowered travel barriers, making trips to China more time-saving and hassle-free.
Current US - China flight services connect multiple major Chinese cities, each with distinct travel appeal. Shanghai, with 52 weekly flights, is the busiest hub and a top destination to experience China’s international and modern vibe. Beijing, the national capital with 28 weekly flights from U.S., boasts magnificent historical sites including the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, serving as the core gateway to explore China’s millennia-old history and culture. Chengdu, a popular tourist city served by 3 weekly flights, is world-renowned for its cute giant pandas and spicy hotpot. Chongqing, the famous mountain city with one weekly flight, draws global attention for its unique eight-dimensional urban landscape and the magical night views of Hongya Cave. Additional flights are also available to Guangzhou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Wuhan, and Shenzhen, giving American travelers more arrival-city options in China.
Flight schedules on the U.S. side are well distributed to serve travelers across the country. Los Angeles and San Francisco operate the highest number of weekly flights, at 38 and 23 respectively. Seattle and New York each run 10 weekly flights; Detroit and Dallas offer 7 weekly flights each; Boston has three weekly services, and Washington, D.C. provides two. This broad network allows travelers from all parts of the United States to conveniently pick nearby flights to China.
As travel demand keeps rising, airlines on both sides are expected to further expand flight capacity and launch more new direct routes to cover more popular Chinese tourist destinations. This will enable American visitors to explore China with even greater ease.
