Nanjing Transportation Smart Card

There are two kinds of transportation smart card in Nanjing, the Nanjing Public Utility IC Card (PUIC; also called Jin Ling Tong in Chinese) for citizens and visitors, and the Nanjing Citizen Card (NJCC) for the locals only.

 Nanjing Public Utility IC Card
A savings card with swipe payment function was issued by Nanjing Public Utility IC Card Company.
 Usage
PUIC can be used on most of the transport systems in Nanjing City, including buses and taxis, metros and ferries. It can also be used in some supermarkets, tourist attractions, car parking, washing and maintaining, etc. The ticket price of city buses will be reduced by 20% and metro fares will have a 5% deduction on the ordinary fare when using the card.

 Types
There are two types - named cards and unnamed cards. Named cards include those for adults and students, while unnamed ones are classified into ordinary, souvenir and special cards. The special cards have various forms, such as wristwatches, mobile phone hanging decorations, key buckles, etc.

 Applying
For named cards, you need to show valid identification. A deposit of CNY 30 must be stored first and CNY 1 will be charged per month for 30 months. For unnamed cards, no identification is needed. Some fees are charged for each type. You can apply at Huaxia Bank, General City-bus Station and some metro stations.

 Refunding
Unnamed cards can not be refunded, while named cards can be refunded. When refunding, you need to show the valid identification you used in your application. A deposit of CNY 30 is needed and the rest of the money on the lost card will be charged on the new one.

As I know, you need to show your ID Card to buy the former one, and it takes CNY30 as a deposit, and both the card and balance can be returned. The latter one takes CNY25 and the card can be got without your ID Card, but only the balance can be returned.

Hello, if you buy a free card which doesn't need registeration with your ID proof, it cannot be returned. You can only refund the balance of the card at the Customer Service Center at the airport, and the fee for the card itself is non-refundable and you can keep the card as souvenir. The closest site for getting back the balance of the card from the hotel can be the Customer Service Center of Minggugong subway station.

Hope help!

Yes! It is applicable to metro, buses, ferries, taxis, etc, no much difference with the one in Beijing.

So how does the transportation card work
i am looking to buy one. My understanding is it costs so much but that amount is placed on the card for use. you get a discount on fares so it makes sense to get one. or is it you purchase the card then load cash on it and you lose the money paid for the card

You reload money into the card, and with the card, you can get a discount when using subway or buses. Then the money in the card will be deducted at the discounted price.
Before leaving China, you can also return the card to get the unused money back. Just protect the card well and do not damage it.

And I pay 30 yuan for the card first, then load the card with money to use at the subway, buses, etc.? The 30 yuan does not go on the card to be used?

The CNY30 is exclusively for the card itself, which cannot be used to take the subway and bus. If you do not want to use the card, you can get your CNY30 back by refunding it as long as the card is not damaged.
