Shanghai Long Museum

The Shanghai Long Museum is a private art museum with considerable scale and collection strength founded by Chinese collectors Liu Yiqian and Wang Wei. At present, it has two large-scale venues in Pudong New District and Xuhui District, respectively Long Museum Pu Dong and Long Museum West Bund. There is also a Long Museum setting in Chongqing.

Long Museum Pu Dong

Located at No. 210, Lane 2255, Luoshan Road, Pudong New District, Shanghai Long Museum Pu Dong has various collections of traditional Chinese art, modern and contemporary art, and Chinese revolutionary art. The light gray white square museum covers a total building area of about 10,000 square meters (2.47 acres) and is divided into three floors.

The first floor mainly displays contemporary art and is equipped with an art shop, a café, a deposit center and a ticket office. The second floor is the permanent exhibition area for revolutionary art which systematically shows the whole picture of Chinese revolutionary theme artworks from the course of the Sino-Japanese War in Yan'an to the new period of Chinese reform and opening up. The third floor is for the permanent and temporary exhibition of Chinese traditional art.

Long Museum West Bund

Located at No. 3398 Longteng Avenue, Xuhui District, the Shanghai Long Museum West Bund has a total construction area of about 33,000 square meters (8 acres) and an exhibition area of 16,000 square meters (4 acres). Built on the former coal transportation dock base, the museum has a large open space and is characterized by a unique umbrella arch structure, retaining the cool original industrial style. It is separated into four floors. The first floor and the second floor are the exhibition spaces of paintings, sculptures, installations and new media. The white rectangular exhibition hall on the ground floor is a permanent exhibition space for Chinese ancient art treasures like calligraphy works, paintings, and artworks during the Republic of China.

The museum also accommodates more public spaces, such as a restaurant with a river view, public landscaped courtyards, cafes, and art product stores on the first floor and the second floor. There is a children’s showroom, a library, an art restoration room and an art bookstore on the first basement level.

About the Exhibition

Visitors can check the specific exhibition information on the official website. The museum mainly displays selected works of famous Chinese and foreign painters and artists, such as landscape painting, abstract painting, oil painting, sculpture and many private collections of the founders. Many special exhibitions with different themes such as New Year's special exhibition and the exhibitions of artists' works will also be organized.

At present, there is only one permanent exhibition - Asian Impression: Chinese, Japanese and South Korean Contemporary Art Exhibition. More than 40 works from Asia at the beginning of this century are selected. Another highlight of the Shanghai Long Museum West Bund is a beautiful cherry forest nearby. Watching exhibitions, taking pictures outside the museum, and strolling around the cherry blossoms all offer a wonderful experience.

Classical Collections

The founders’ classical collections are on display in the two museums but many in the West Bund. You may appreciate the painting artworks created by famous painters Zhang Daqian and Qi Baishi and a long scroll painting by Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty (1082-1135).
