 Winter of Huangshan starts from December, and the weather is generally cold, not ideal for long-time sightseeing outdoors. On most days in the month, the highest temperature roughly ranges from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius (41 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit), so the weather during the day is frigid. When a temperature drops occurs, the lowest temperature can decrease below 0°C (32°F), making the weather freezing cold, and thus activities before sunrise and after sunset are not suggested.

As for the Huangshan Mountain, which has an 8 to 10°C (46 to 50°F) temperature difference with the city area, the weather is even colder, with the highest temperature generally between about 0 and 10°C , and the lowest temperature below 0°C since mid-December.
 With the monthly precipitation of about 42 mm on about 5 days, Huangshan in December is the least rainy all year round. In the city area, light rain and light snow happen from now and then, which have almost no influence on sightseeing. While on the Huangshan Mountain, fleece can make road surfaces slippery, especially those in the shady area, and the climb may be a little dangerous. What’s more, the climate of Huangshan Mountain is changeable, and rain and snow can come suddenly.
 The shortest day for about 10 hours and 10 minutes long falls on around December 22, with the sunrise and sunset time respectively at about 07:00 and 17:10. In such a short duration of the day, it’s not suitable to put too many sightseeing activities into your itinerary.
 It’s not suggested to visit Huangshan in December. Here are reasons: the climate turns cold from December on, so people won’t be very comfortable when they are outdoors; both the Heavenly Capital Peak and the West Sea Valley of the Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area will be closed temporarily since December in case of accidents in cold winter; Huangshan is in its slack season in December, and some shops and hotels just close for maintenance, so you may not enjoy that comprehensive services.

However, if you can tolerate cold winter weather and have a limited budget, you can still make your trip to Huangshan this month. Not many tourists travel to Huangshan in frigid winter, so a Huangshan tour in December, 2025 is relatively serene. Besides, snow scenery in the Huangshan Mountain area is a highlight this month.
  Warm clothes: For sightseeing in the city area, opt for thermal underwear, a sweater, a padded jacket / a down jacket as your tops, and thermal leggings and jeans as your bottoms. Clothes for climbing the Huangshan Mountain include a quick-dry thermal underwear, an outdoor jacket with a fleeced lining, thermal pants, and outdoor pants.

 Accessories for a warm climb: A woolen hat to protect against cold winds on the mountain, gloves for warming hands, and a scarf as needed.

 Warm and non-slippery shoes: Sneakers are OK in the city area, while in the mountain area, non-slippery climbing shoes are more suggested.
 1. In consideration of comfortability and also probability of scenery, it’s more suggested to enjoy snow views of the Huangshan Mountain on sunny days after snow. The famous Welcome Pine is covered by a blanket of white snow, and rime clinging to branches is glittering in the sun, turning the mountain a serene world of ice and snow.

2. Ancient villages in Huangshan, such as Hongcun, Chengkan, and Xidi, are also unmissable on sunny days, where you can not only wander around to admire residences in a quaint style, but also feel leisure and comfort of local people.

3. Huangshan in December also has a few slightly rainy days and snowy days, when you can consider visiting the Tunxi Old Street to escape the coldness of winter. Museums on the street collect old furniture used by people living 600 years ago and also paintings. After viewing these, local snacks including fur tofu and stinky mandarin fish are worth a try.
