When is the Best Time to Visit Huangshan?

The best times to visit Huangshan are its spring from March to May and autumn from September to November. The weather in these two seasons are relatively moderate, ideal for both traveling around ancient villages with traditional residences and climbing the spectacular Huangshan Mountain. Besides, precipitation in these two seasons are low, making it suitable and convenient to enjoy natural scenery outdoors.
 

Best Time to Visit Ancient Villages: Sunny & Drizzly Days in Spring & Autumn

On sunny days in spring, the weather is pleasantly warm, perfect for getting close to nature and enjoying flower views, such as rapeseed flowers in Shexian County and azaleas in the Huangshan Mountain.

The highlight on sunny days in autumn is the sun-drying view in ancient villages such as Chengkan and Xidi. The cool and less rainy climate in this season offers good natural conditions for storing product, and also makes the vivid harvest scene unmissable.

Ancient villages in Huangshan feature quaint residences, which are suitable to view whether the day is clear. On sunny days, it’s comfortable to stroll around the Hongcun Ancient Village to view the buildings and their reflection on the lake surface. Even if it’s drizzling in spring and autumn, these villages are also worth a visit, because the serene atmosphere created by gentle rain makes the buildings even more attractive.

Best Time to View Sunrise in Mt. Huangshan: Dawns in Late-May & Late-July

Sunrise is stunning in the Huangshan Mountain, and it looks even more spectacular together with vividly-shaped rocks of “a young person devoutly worshipping Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva”. When the sun rises to the top of the Bodhisattva Rock, its gorgeous light dyes the entire sky red, and everyone watching this will be amazed. This view is so precious because it only appears twice in a year: May 18 to 22, and July 24 to 28, and people believe it can bring good luck.

Best Time to View Foliage in Mt. Huangshan: Sunny Days from Oct. to Nov.

From October on, leaves of maple trees, smoke trees, and ginkgo trees in the Huangshan Mountain turn brilliantly golden and red little by little. To view the forests dyed in vibrant hues, the best choices are sunny days from October to November, when visibility is good and the weather is comfortably cool for climbing mountain.

In frigid winter, you can still view wonderful snow scenery in the Huangshan Mountain. On sunny days after snow, pine trees and variously-shaped rocks on the mountain are covered by snow, and rime glitters in brilliant sunshine. Besides, road conditions in the mountain area on these days are relatively good, making it more convenient and stable to walk on the trail.
 

Less Recommended Periods to Visit Huangshan: Summer & Winter

Excessively high temperature and the plum rain season jointly make summer not a good time to visit Huangshan, because people generally feel hot and damp in this season, let alone spending much time enjoying open-air activities. When winter comes, constant low temperature is a bad factor for sightseeing, and foggy and snowy weather may cause bad travel experience in Huangshan.
 

Periods to Avoid Visiting Huangshan

(1) Chinese New Year Holiday, which is roughly between 16 and 23, February, 2026.
(2) China’s May Day Holiday from May 1 to 5.
(3) China’s National Day Holiday from October 1 to 7.
(4) Weekends in July and August.
