How to Get to the Great Wall from Hong Kong
You should take a flight or train from Hong Kong to Beijing first, or an overnight high speed sleeper train from the neighboring Shenzhen. The flight and train distances between Hong Kong and the Great Wall are about 1,250 miles (2,012 kilometers) and 1,550 miles (2,494 kilometers) respectively, while Shenzhen is about 1,500 miles (2,414 kilometers) from the Great Wall by train. Upon arrival, take a city bus or train to it. A direct visit from Hong Kong needs at least two or three days while the Shenzhen-Beijing overnight high speed trains make one day trip possible. By Flight: Fly from Hong Kong Airport to Beijing Capital Airport. The trip takes 3 to 4 hours. There are about 50 departures every day. The prices of the flight tickets vary from HKD 1,000 to 3,000 according to seasons.
By Train: The train departs from Hung Hom Railway Station for Beijing West Railway Station at 15:15 every two days. It takes about 24 hours. A hard sleeper costs HKD 574 to 601; a soft sleeper costs HKD 934; a deluxe soft sleeper costs HKD 1,191.
By the way, you can reach Hung Hom Railway Station from Hong Kong airport by bus line A21. The fare is HKD 33, and the bus ride takes about 75 minutes. Also, Hung Hom Railway Station is connected with MTR East Rail Line and West Rail Line.

from Shenzhen to Beijing
By Shenzhen- Beijing Train: If the schedule of the direct train from Hong Kong cannot meet your requirement, you may go to the neighboring Shenzhen City, and take a high speed train to Beijing West Railway Station from Shenzhen North Railway Station. Two daytime high speed trains depart at 7:53 and 11:31 every day; duration is about 10.5 hours; a second class seat costs CNY 936.5 and a first class seat costs CNY 1,479.5. Apart from the daytime high speed trains, there are four overnight high speed sleeper trains every Friday to Monday; the duration is about 11.5 hours; the soft sleeper (lower berth) costs CNY 1,450.
You may take a direct bus to Shenzhen North Railway Station from Coach Station, T2, Hong Kong Airport, via Shenzhen Bay Port. The frequency is about 30 minutes. The trip takes about 2 hours, and the fare is HKD 220.
If you start from the downtown area, you can take a direct bus to Shenzhen North Railway Station from Marco Polo Hotel, Metropark Hotel Mongkok, Sheung Wan Shun Tak Center, etc. by way of Shenzhen Bay Port. The frequency is 30 to 60 minutes. The trip takes about 2 hours, and the bus fare is HKD 80. Or, you can take East Rail Line to Lok Ma Chau Station. After crossing the Futian Port, take metro Longhua Line to the North Railway Station.
How to Make a Day Trip to Great Wall from Hong Kong
Neither direct flight nor train is possible for such a day trip. But the Shenzhen-Beijing overnight high speed train makes a day trip possible. The trains depart from Shenzhen North Railway Station at 19:40, 19:45, 19:50, and 19:55 on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. They reach Beijing West Railway Station at 06:56, 07:01, 07:13, and 07:18 in the early morning. Then, you can continue your journey to the Great Wall. After visiting, you can come back to West Railway Station, and catch a train back to Shenzhen. The return trains depart at 20:10, 20:15, 20:20, and 20:25, and the trip takes about 11 hours. Please note that the overnight trains do not depart daily, but from Friday to Monday.
You should apply for a visa in advance so as to enter mainland China.
Book the direct train ticket from Hong Kong to Beijing in advance as they are in demand in most cases.
The Futian Port is open from 6:30 to 22:30, and it usually takes 10 to 25 minutes to cross the border.
The Shenzhen Bay Port is open from 6:30 to 24:00, and it usually takes 10 to 15 minutes to cross the border.
Public transport leaves for Badaling from Deshengmen or Huangtudian Railway Station; and for Mutianyu from Dongzhimen.
