Beijing Weather in March

Season: Winter
In short: transition from cold to warm, hardly rain or snow, windy

Temperature

In March, the temperature in Beijing is on an overall upward trend. Specifically, from the early month to the end of the month, the daily minimum rises from around 0℃ (32℉) to more than 10℃ (50℉), while the daily maximum rises from around 10℃ (50℉) to above 20℃ (68℉). In 2025, the maximum temperature in late March even reached 29℃ (84℉). Therefore, you may feel a little cold in the first half, but pleasantly warm in the second half.

The above just tells the general conditions. As March is the transitional period from the cold winter to the warm spring, Beijing’s weather is very changeable at this time and you may experience days with sharply rising or falling temperatures. Moreover, the temperature difference between the daytime and nighttime is huge, even at 15℃ (59℉) on some days. Therefore, when visiting Beijing this month, you are advised to always keep an eye on the weather forecast and wear clothes accordingly.

Precipitation

Due to the large span of temperature, both rain and snow are possible this month. However, you don’t have to worry about they will ruin your trip at all, because monthly precipitation is very low at about 8 mm on average scattering in about 3 days. The humidity is also low and you may feel the air is noticeably dry.

Daylight Hours/ Sunshine Hours

Daylight hours and sunshine hours are both getting longer in March, at around 12 and 8 hours respectively per day on average. The closing time of some scenic spots will be delayed, for example, from March 16 every year, the closing time of the Mutianyu Great Wall will be extended from 17:30 to 18:00. At the same time, however, the UV rays get stronger, and you may need to apply sunscreen when you go out during sunny and warm midday hours.

Wind

In March, the weather of Beijing will be windy because of the frequent meeting of cold and warm air. Combined with low precipitation and dry air, dust is easily blown up and Beijing may experience some dusty days.

Another thing worth noting is that the wind will blow pollen all over the place this month, and the Temple of Heaven, which has more than 30,000 cypress trees, is the hardest hit. The pollen of these cypress trees will then float in the air like smoke, and people with rhinitis are advised to avoid going there in late March, the pollen outbreak period.

 Accessories:
1. March is windy and sandy, and there will be pollen and catkin in the air, so you may need to wear masks, especially those with sensitive noses.
2. Lip balms and facial moisturizers are necessary in dry March.
